Whether viewed as subjugator or protector, Oliver Cromwell was a titan of 17th century England. French theologian Merle D'Aubigné wrote this 1847 biography for one purpose: "rectification of the common opinion with regard to Cromwell's religious character." And rectify he does.

The 19th century was an age that witnessed great progress in many areas of exploration and learning. However, according to J. C. Ryle, it was an age of great ignorance too. What particularly distressed Ryle was the scant knowledge of the English Reformation evident amongst his contemporaries. In this lay a grave danger: one of the reasons so many congregations drift from their evangelical foundations is their sheer ignorance of Christian history, and their lack of understanding of the major doctrinal controversies and why they matter.

This book has left deep impressions upon me. Ryle gives a fiery and passionate description of heroes and martyrs. He does not hold back to describe the evils of Catholicism simply stating the facts. It is priceless to know the rich spiritual heritage that we share in the English speaking world! We are in debt to heroes of the Faith who stood for biblical Christianity in their day.
The narration is enjoyable to listen to and very well put together. I highly recommend to anyone who loves pure religion and desires to stand for the Lord in their time.
