Historia
Cassie Andrews works in a New York City bookshop, shelving books, making coffee for customers, and living an unassuming, ordinary life. Until the day one of her favorite customers—a lonely yet charming old man—dies right in front of her. Cassie is devastated. She always loved his stories, and now she has nothing to remember him by. Nothing but the last book he was reading. But this is no ordinary book… It is the Book of Doors. Inscribed with enigmatic words and mysterious drawings, it promises Cassie that any door is every door. You just need to know how to open them.

A Beautifully Human Story Magically Woven
Revisado: 04-18-25
This is a complex yet amazingly approachable story. It takes on themes of regret, pain, joy, evil, hope. Time travel and change. I am still processing the story. I would love a book discussion. The narration was good. The descriptions beautiful.

Slow disappointing Start, Good Finish
Revisado: 07-11-23
The first half to 3/4of the story was disappointing and I found it hard to get into. I found the American characters too flat and a bit cliché. The reader's NY accents were a bit off. I think the author could have made more interesting use of the NYC high society of the time period. It was interesting/odd choice of making Marty 's mom Filipina. This is not an immigrant group normally thought of in NYC in the 20s. I have really enjoyed each of the other stories. I will continue to listen as in general I have enjoyed mysteries and characters.

Historia
At a time of much despair over the future of liberal democracy, Harvard historian Jill Lepore makes a stirring case for the nation in This America. Since the end of the Cold War, Lepore writes, American historians have largely retreated from the idea of "the nation", in part because the rise of political nationalism has rendered it suspect and unpalatable. Bucking this trend, however, Lepore argues forcefully that the nation demands scrutiny. Without an honest reckoning with America's collective past, we will be at the mercy of unscrupulous demagogues....

Historia
Throughout history, women have played integral roles in family, society, religion, government, war - in short, in all aspects of human civilization. Powerful women have shaped laws, led rebellions, and played key roles in dynastic struggles. Some were caught up in forces beyond their control, while others manipulated and murdered their way to the top. However, unearthing their stories from the historical record has been a challenge, with the ordinary difficulties of preserving information across the generations increased by centuries of historical bias and gendered expectations.

Historia
Our current climate of partisan fury is not new, and in The Soul of America Meacham shows us how what Abraham Lincoln called the “better angels of our nature” have repeatedly won the day. Painting surprising portraits of Lincoln and other presidents, including Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, and LBJ, and illuminating the courage of influential citizen activists and civil rights pioneers, Meacham brings vividly to life turning points in American history. Each of these dramatic hours have been shaped by the contest to lead the country to look forward rather than back.

Hope for Nation
Revisado: 07-24-18
Beautifully written and read, The Soul of America is must read for today. Through the wise words of our past leaders in the face of deep divisive challenges, we can garner hope to face todays demons. It is good to remember our nation was founded with a profound understanding that as humans we carry both angels and demons in our nature, but that with wisdom and time and a commitment to the greater good as people we can heed the Angels and resist the demons.

The year is 1517. Dismas is a relic hunter: one who procures "authentic" religious relics for wealthy and influential clients. His two most important patrons are Frederick the Wise, elector of Saxony; and soon-to-be Cardinal Albrecht of Mainz. While Frederick is drawn to the recent writing of Martin Luther, Albrecht pursues the financial and political benefits of religion and seeks to buy a cardinalship through the selling of indulgences.

Starts slow but evolves into typical Buckley satire. It is possible that I don't know enough of the history to understand some of the humor in the first half if the book. The second half was very good.

Historia
America's blueprint for mass education has been followed across the globe - yet international student assessments show that achievement varies sharply, with the US and much of Europe typically scoring average at best. Not surprisingly, this state of affairs has sparked anxieties about an educational crisis. The problem, if there is one, is highly complex, and in these 24 thought-provoking lectures led by an associate professor of comparative and international education, you'll take a meaningful look at education around the world to understand why.

Good Overview of Various Educational Policy
Revisado: 05-28-16
Where does How the World Learns rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is good Great Course on global educational policy; however, the title is a bit misleading. I was hoping to hear more about actual teaching and learning philosophies and approaches in the classroom. Much of the policy information I knew. As someone who has taught international students at the university level, I am interested in learning more about the various processes of learning across countries and cultures and how knowing this can shape ones teaching. This course had some of this information but was really more about policy.
What did you like best about this story?
The real comparisons in the classroom between cultures, parental attitudes toward teaching and learning.

Couldn't Stop Listening
Revisado: 05-25-13
Would you consider the audio edition of While We Were Watching Downton Abbey to be better than the print version?
The narrator, Orlagh Cassidy, definitely added to the spell the book cast. She was amazing with her voices.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked how the author wove Downton Abbey into the story line. She also added a lot of contemporary detail which added to the story. I enjoyed the character development.
What does Orlagh Cassidy bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Her voices definitely brought the characters to life and added to the weaving together of the Downton Abbey story line with the main character's story lines.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I couldn't put the audio book down, so to speak. It was like 'reading" a good book that keeps one from one's daily tasks.
Any additional comments?
Downton Abbey fans are definitely the target audience. I think it helps if you have seen the program. There are definitely spoilers in the book if you haven't.
