Most of these stories while well written showcase abuse, mistrust, and bad people doing bad things. Not an easy read.

Captures the struggles

As a young woman in the 60s this book captured the remember struggles to grow and be. The characters were well written and brought the story to life. Highly recommend.
i watched (and participated at home) with Jack LaLane through his television show - the way the narrator pronounced his name was unsettling as it was not as I remembered it. After a quick review of old videos of his show, she did not say it as it is commonly pronounced in the media.

I wasn't especially fond of any of these characters; while their personalities did grow on me as the story unfolded it took most of the book to even care what happened to any of them. The lives of the main family did lot mesh with their description; the father was a workaholic who was absent at home;the mother was so caring of her child she allowed her to live in a crumbling home; and the child while described as 15 acted like 9. I was also not in love with the narrator; just ok. Not horrible but it took a lot to finish--if I was reading this I would have skipped many of the rants.
