Spider-Verse from Mile's perspective

Into the Spider-Verse adapts the 2018 Sony film into a book format that focuses entirely from Miles' POV, which is honestly disappointing, as the source film is already seen primarily through Miles' POV. We lost a few scenes that Miles was not present for in the movie, such as the Spider's infiltration of the Kingpin's dinner, and, my biggest gripe with this adaptation, we don't see any scenes through the others' eyes. One of the greatest strengths of adaptations is being able to get inside the characters' heads to show exactly their thoughts and feelings, and this book fails to add anything to the narrative.

Adaption: Weaker than the movie. No new information added.

Recommended for: Fans of the Spider-Verse comics and movie.

Overall, 3/5. It's fine...just could've been great.

O'Neill began his Nostalgic Trivia series with a look at the 80's; and now he's back with a look at the 90's. I enjoyed the trivia and facts sprinkled throughout the novel, especially since despite being born in '93, I have very little primary or even secondary knowledge of the decade's most important events (Between being a child and public schooling rarely teaching beyond the WW2 period). So that's pretty neat.

Accuracy: Near as I can tell, he's accurate and isn't obviously biased.

Narration: Miller is consistent as his other titles, no complaints.

O'Neill continues on his American states series with Ohio. Now, as a Michigander (born & raised), I have an innate hatred of all things Ohio, but even I need to admit this was a good entry in the series. In all seriousness, it's a good overview of the roughly last 150 yrs of Ohioan history.

Audio: Miller has narrated a few of O'Neill's other titles, and brings his same quality here. I still wish they added in an additional effect or a different pronunciation to differ between the main text, headings and sub headings; but that's a small quibble.

He who fights monsters

Wraith Knight is a twist on the classic saying: He who fights monsters; becomes a monster. However; what happens when a monster fights heroes? Our main character is a man out of time; returned to the world of the living about 250 years after his heroic death fighting the dark lords' forces, but when he returns he is one of those forces. As he tries to learn what happened, he learns of the current plight facing the mortal realm and joins forces with two women: one a martial fanatic (featured on the cover), the other a shunned witch. These women are both pretty compelling and provide more than the usual fare of 'generic love interest'

Rep: The main women characters are both bisexual (ex-lovers), and all three main characters are seemingly poly-amorous, which is nice to see.

Audio: Berkot is enjoyable to listen to, everyone has a distinct voice, and the audio quality is good. No complaints here.

Recommended for: Fans of nuanced villains and heroes

The plot comes straight outta a ScyFy channel tv movie: asteroid falls, people get sick, zombies ensue. The military is heavy handed and only the local town sheriff can (or will) do the right thing.

Just as the cheesy B-movie plot demands, there's strange tech that the military seems to take for granted, despite being a huge game changer (yes, I'm talking about the Force fields). Anyways,

I'll be honest, there's not much that sets this one apart from other zombie stories. There are lesbian and bisexual characters, and while it's important to me that there's representation in media, even these folks are pretty badly written.

Narrator: Mitchell isn't bad, but sometimes you just can't do much with the material you're given.

Recommended for: zombie and B-list sci-fi thriller fans.

Title is an oft-repeated phrase, and unfortunately it does get annoying. But as far as actually telling about the restoration, it's informative. Perhaps not the most interesting story ever told, but I did enjoy learning about the process behind the restoration project.

Nevitt is a fine narrator, rarely did I notice any background noise or mispronounced words.

Recommended for: anyone interested in learning the ins & outs of a restoration project for museums.

Bill O'Neill returns to the Trivia series with an entry on the American Revolutionary War, including its major causes and some of the lasting effects. As always, O'Neill is a great historian, rarely shying away from the less comfortable facts, such as the foundation of a 'free' country that relies heavily on the usage of slave labor.

Newman is a good narrator, although I still wish for a better distinction between text and headings. It's a small quibble though.

Recommended for: American history buffs, war history buffs.

Capes & Zombies

Ex-Heroes, by Peter Clines, is a zombie story set in a universe where superpowered humans had just become entering the spotlight before the apocalypse started. The heroes are commanded by the mysterious Stealth (think: Batwoman), and led by the pure-hearted St. George, who's basically a dragon. This story shows how the world ended and gives all the heroes a chapter for their origin story.

Thankfully, this is an action story, not horror (or gore-or, as is more common). Yes, there will be disturbing imagery, but it's relatively tame.

Narration: I enjoyed the duo narration team of Snyder & Hvam voicing male & female characters, respectively. If the chapter POV is from a male character, Snyder narrates the majority, if the POV narrator is female, Hvam takes the reins. It helped give a little bit of a change to break the monotony of listening to the same voice for hours on end.

Recommended for: Fans of the superhero and zombie genres.

American history

Revisado: 11-28-18

This edition covers a vast swath of American history, albeit mostly post-colonization. O'Neill and Newman, as always, do a good work on presenting history in an entertaining fashion. O'Neill also makes a point that sometimes the history we know isn't always the most accurate history, due in part to the survivor's ability to not only write the history, but also edit it to the survivor's favor.

As far as I can tell, everything is reported on in a fair and accurate manner. Most notably, O'Neill continues to include information discovered and recent history right up until its publication date - even as a former history major I've been hard-pressed to find any American history texts including data post-WW2, let alone anything past the 70's!

Audio: Newman is great, I enjoy his narration.

Bark, Episode 1: Mutated Beginnings is an origin story. An unpowered man is experimented on, and gains various powers, mostly all related to dog-themed powers; including super smell, natural weapons, and inability to speak human languages.

Pretty simple hero story, but I enjoyed it. It'll be interesting to see what happens next.

Audio: Tovar is okay, but there are a few technical hiccups now and again (such as a repeated sentence or unedited cough)

Recommended for: fans of the super-hero genre
