Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Historia
Part love story, part historical epic, part tragedy, The House of Special Purpose illuminates an empire at the end of its reign. Living in England with his beloved wife, Zoya, Georgy prepares to make one final journey back to the Russia he once knew and loved, the Russia that both destroyed and defined him. As Georgy remembers days gone by, we are transported to Saint Petersburg, to the Winter Palace of the tzar, in the early twentieth century - a time of change, threat, and bloody revolution.

Historia
Divorced from his own wife and carrying on halfheartedly with another man's, saddled with a bum knee and friends who make enemies redundant, Sully now has one new problem to cope with: a long-estranged son who is in imminent danger of following in his father's footsteps. With its uproarious humor and a heart that embraces humanity's follies as well as its triumphs, Nobody's Fool, from Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Richard Russo, is storytelling at its most generous. Nobody’s Fool was made into a movie starring Paul Newman, Bruce Willis, Jessica Tandy, and Melody Griffith.

Convoluted poetic mess
Revisado: 11-27-18
For such a long book with such great reviews, I expected a lot more. I found this story to be confusing, with extremely shallow character development, and the plot was unbelievable. Just when I thought an 'ah ha' moment was coming, I was left feeling completely underwhelmed and like 'whaaat? I don't get it' and nothing ever really became clear. The writer loves to paint a picture with words, so the endless descriptions of leaves and nature, while nicely done, in this context, I found very annoying. I couldn't wait for it to be over. Thumbs way down.

Historia
When they were growing up, Dana, Harper, and Tawny thought of themselves as “sometimes sisters". They connected only during the summer month they’d all spend at their grandmother’s rustic lakeside resort in north Texas. But secrets started building, and ten years have passed since they’ve all been together - in fact, they’ve rarely spoken, and it broke their grandmother’s heart.

So hoaky
Revisado: 09-04-18
I keep trying with Carolyn Brown but her writing I finally decided is not for me. I did not attach to any of these characters, story was predictable and shallow under the guise of deeper issues. Eyerolling throughout I turned the speed up to get through it faster hoping somehow it would get better. I hated how the narrator said “he said” “she said” after the majority of sentences - completely unnecessary and distracting. I vow I’m done with this writer and will avoid the narrator as much as possible.

Ummmm...
Revisado: 10-22-16
Kind of don't know how to feel about this book. No question it is well written but the subject matter was pretty tough to deal with overall, i.e. a live story that begins when the female is 8 and the male is 19 or 20. Sometimes a very awkward listen.
