A cozy floating mystery!
Revisado: 10-01-24
The book was full of laughs, a splash of romance, nostalgia, and learning that even later in life you can change and open yourself back up despite previous dramas. The author has such a unique, poetic voice that brings the perfect tone to each scene; whether pleasure or peril!

Historia
Over 200 years ago, famed explorer Meriwether Lewis died on the Natchez Trace under mysterious circumstances. Historians still argue whether it was suicide or murder. That shouldn't affect a weekend campout in the present day for Frannie Shoemaker and her friends, but it does. They meet interesting characters at a mountain man rendezvous and get mixed up as usual with the strange goings-on. Because camping can be murder!

Another easy and enjoyable short mystery. I enjoyed learning about some history and seeing these character through another mystery, though they do seem to be simpler and shorter.

A cozy/thriller mystery! The starry skies over New Mexico, the "Land of Enchantment", may hold secrets of their own. The Shoemakers and the Ferraros, on an extended camping trip, find themselves picking up a souvenir they don't want and taking sidetrips they didn't plan on.

Interesting new installment
Revisado: 09-27-22
This book was a different take on the series. There is no mystery - it is more like an adventure novel and I had so much fun reading it. I was so worried for my favorite characters as they accidentally get mixed up in some crazy dangerous happenings and I miss a bit of the camping atmosphere, but overall it was heart pumping fun! As always the narration is terrific!

A holiday novella. The Shoemakers and Ferraros plan to spend Christmas in Texas with Larry and Jane Ann's brother and then take a camping trip through the Southwest. But those plans are stopped cold when they hit a rogue ice storm in Missouri and they end up snowbound in a campground. And that's just the beginning.

A fun holiday story!
Revisado: 09-27-22
This was such a fun and short holiday story with some of my favorite characters. It demonstrates that not having a traditional Christmas celebration can still be a fun and meaningful time and really celebrates the reason for the season (taking care of others). Even with the terrible weather, I was left picturing a cozy, white Christmas in a camper with good friends and food. As usually I love the narration of the story and the characters!

Geocaching isn't supposed to be about finding dead bodies. But when retiree Frannie Shoemaker goes camping, standard definitions don't apply. A weekend in a beautiful state park in Iowa buzzes with fund-raising events, a search for ninja turtles, a bevy of suspects, and lots of great food. But are the campers in the wrong place at the wrong time once too often?

Another enjoyable mystery
Revisado: 09-22-22
I'm so happy to be back in this series. I have really grown to love these characters and their dynamic. I'm not a big camper, but this series makes me want to go get an RV and set out for nature. They always find fun things to do and it seems like the best time (minus the murders). This book focused on geocaching which always sounded so fun and I love how it factored into the mystery. I was slightly shocked by the ending and I appreciate how it all came together. I'm looking forward to continuing! The narration was just perfect for these characters and I can't imagine reading this series without it.

Another really fun ride with Sue Jan and Lovita
Revisado: 07-24-18
This series is so fun and just continues to entertain me and make me smile with each installment. Sue Jan and Lovita are my favorite fictional friends and I feel like I am part of their circle now. I enjoyed the circus aspect of this story and all the different performer's and their personalities. I was completely stumped by the mystery and the author successfully lead me down the wrong path multiple times. The end was so sweet and I can't wait to see where else this author takes these characters. The narration was wonderful and really brings these characters to life. I felt like I could clearly see these characters and when I think of them, I hear the narrator in my head.

Short and fun holiday mystery
Revisado: 08-08-17
If you could sum up Felony Fruitcake in three words, what would they be?
Funny, southern, holiday
What other book might you compare Felony Fruitcake to and why?
This book reminds me of one of the Steph Plum mysteries by Janet Evanovich because there is so much humor mixed in with the amateur sleuths solving murder mysteries.
Which scene was your favorite?
I loved the scene where Sue Jan goes to the hospital and finds all the older ladies clustered around Bubba's bedside waiting for him to wake up and fighting over him.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
No holiday party is safe from the dread Fruitcake.
Any additional comments?
I really enjoy this series. The characters are over the top, but endearing and the mysteries are always interesting. I have so much fun following them in their investigations.

Murder, mystery meat, and morning sickness! Hudson and Lovita are expecting, and she's having trouble keeping food down for the first time in her life. Her best friend, Sue Jan, is busy juggling mommyhood. The Crown of Glory Beauty Salon and Boutique is busier than a one-toothed man in a corn-on-the-cob-eating contest. Things are great until a handsome law intern disappears after an argument with their top stylist's once-upon-a-time wayward son.

Lovita and Sue Jan are at it again!
Revisado: 09-20-16
What did you love best about That Wasn't Chicken?
The characters are my favorite part about this book and this whole series. The friendship between Lovita and Sue Jan is so upbeat and lovely to listen to. And there were some new characters that were so bizarre and on such a spectrum that it made the story that much more interesting.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book frequently made me laugh! Especially when they found out "what wasn't chicken"!
Any additional comments?
I am so glad I jumped into this series. This the second in the series that I've listened to and it was not a disappointment. This book so was entertaining and relaxing to listen to. It was perfect to bring my mood up during long work days. Lovita and Sue Jan was funny, and very capable characters who can't help but give into their love of sleuthing. I love that their husbands are so supportive of this "hobby" they have. The mystery was strange and interesting and I definitely didn't see the end coming!
The narration was again really wonderful for this book. The Southern twang is on point and isn't overdone, which I really appreciated. You could tell a lot about the characters just from their voice and affectation (for example the Senator and his wife).

With her wedding to Hudson just months away, all Lovita's plans seem to be going awry. A crooked politician is running for mayor, his girlfriend is opening a new beauty shop, and the contractor building Sue Jan and Monroe's dream home is found dead. To top it all off, the money from the high school band's fundraiser has disappeared. Before Lovita walks down the aisle, the girls have to nail a killer, uncover missing band fundraiser money, save their beauty shop, and rescue the town of Wachita. Piece of cake.

Lavita and Sue Jan are my new favorites
Revisado: 09-09-16
What did you love best about Dead As a Doornail?
This was 4.5 stars for me. This was light and funny and an entertaining quick read (perfect for a cozy mystery). I am just jumping into this series from the middle, but the characters are so strong that I don't feel like I've missed anything by starting with the 3rd book. Lavita and Sue Jan are a hilarious duo and I love reading about funny friendships like theirs. They have attitude and they know how to use it. But they also have good sense and compassion (as seen in the hunt for the missing band money and Lavita letting Sue Jan's family stay on her property). They are the best kind of southern ladies who know how to have fun and are nosy as heck. There were other characters that just really annoyed me (as they should), and some that were so ridiculous I couldn't help crack up (Sue Jan's trailer family who I REALLY hope stick around for the future books). I'm also a sucker for a small town setting and the author got Wachita just right.
What did you like best about this story?
The narration for this book was spot on. I have read previous books that take place in the south and sometimes I am cringing by the narrators accent (too little or way too much). The southern twang was great (and there were discernible differences between the characters from different areas, which really helped the authenticity and keeping the characters straight). I'll continue this series listening to the audiobook because it definitely adds good thins to the story.
Which character – as performed by Michelle Babb – was your favorite?
Sue Jan's was my favorite character performed by Michelle Babb. She gave Sue Jan just enough Southern twang and the attitude that the character truly deserves.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes and I almost did. I got sucked in and it was such easy listening that I enjoyed most of it while commuting and doing chores around my house.
Any additional comments?
As for the mystery, I was intrigued and thrown off but a couple of unlikable characters. I refused to believe that anyone I liked was part of the drama, but I wasn't able to pinpoint the murderer until about the time that Lavita did. The reasoning seemed a little weak and I wish the author maybe put a little more effort into that, but I guess people can do crazy things for any reason.
The person drama (Lavita's wedding and Sue Jan's secret news) really added to the story and made me want to continue reading to see what's next. I'll come back for the characters and the southern town (and accents).
