Historia
Does a sinister cabal actually control international affairs? Were William Shakespeare and Abraham Lincoln secretly involved with a group founded to discover and preserve the principles of alchemy? Has an ancient mystical religion really been reduced to a length of red string that sells for a dollar an inch? Secret societies surround us, yet they often remain a mystery. Their secrecy suggests sacrilege and crime, and their loyalties stand accused of undermining the world's governments. They generate fear, suspicion, and - above all - fascination.

interesting read

Trying to balance superstition, reality and conspiracy theory behind secret societies. A great read to know some historical aspects but use your critical thinking. and filters to discern where reality and conspiracy exists.

Historia
When Samuel Zemurray arrived in America in 1891, he was tall, gangly, and penniless. When he died in the grandest house in New Orleans 69 years later, he was among the richest, most powerful men in the world. In between, he worked as a fruit peddler, banana hauler, dockside hustler, and plantation owner. He battled and conquered the United Fruit Company, becoming a symbol of the best and worst of the United States: proof America is the land of opportunity, but also a classic example of the corporate pirate who treats foreign nations as the backdrop for his adventures.

We are stuck, stymied, frustrated. But it needn't be this way. There is a formula for success that's been followed by the icons of history - from John D. Rockefeller to Amelia Earhart to Ulysses S. Grant to Steve Jobs - a formula that let them turn obstacles into opportunities. Faced with impossible situations, they found the astounding triumphs we all seek.

Great Concept bad examples
Revisado: 07-07-22
Worth reading it, a great concept and idea on a pretty well thought book. I struggled with the examples that do not tie to the idea of stoicism, definitely not in a philosophical sense. Shrewed and rough businessmen like Rockefeller and Jobs or political figures that lack basic principles of the very idea of philosophy like Clinton or Obama have no place in this book. If the ethical or moral is missing then it cannot be philosophic in the stoic sense which are founded on the Aristotelian ethics.
It would be the equivalent of talking about Hitler only in the strict sense of overcoming adversity to rise to power and excluding the immoral methods used by him to accomplish that. And by the way, a person who reads philosophy is not a philosopher he is simply a reader. A basic rule of philosophers is to define a concept before they talk about it, otherwise there is no dialogue (λόγος) and hence no learning. " Αρχή σοφίας η ονομάτων επίσκεψης" (Antisthenis, 455-365 B.C.). It shows that the author was young when he wrote it.

This book can change people's approach on people. Although initially it may seem outdated it is based on one single principle which considers the core of human nature unchangeable. My take from this book is to use the ideas with a" twist" in today's relationships. Hopefully, we are flexible enough!

Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.
