Historia
David Sheff's story is a first: a teenager's addiction from the parent's point of view, a real-time chronicle of the shocking descent into substance abuse and the gradual emergence into hope.
Before meth, Sheff's son, Nic, was a varsity athlete, honor student, and award-winning journalist. After meth, he was a trembling wraith who stole money from his eight-year-old brother and lived on the streets. With haunting candor, Sheff traces the first warning signs, the attempts at rehabilitation, and, at last, the way past addiction. He shows us that, whatever an addict's fate, the rest of the family must care for one another, too, lest they become addicted to addiction.

Authentic Telling Of Living With An Addict
Revisado: 04-02-25
I enjoyed this book, more than I thought I would. I watched the movie first and enjoyed it. Then I listened to the book which helped give a sobering look at living with an addict in your life. I write this as someone in recovery from alcohol use disorder. It was authentic, raw, and vulnerable. At times, I felt myself getting frustrated at the author's son, but I recognized a lot of the same actions I did myself. I would highly recommend this to those curious about what life is like with a family member who is in active addiction or even someone who has an addict in their life so that they know they are not alone.

Useful lessons for life
Revisado: 04-01-25
Overall, some good information to handle stress in life. As a reader of Brene Brown’s work on authenticity and vulnerability, this seemed like it borrowed a lot from that research. This read with more practical every day life situations. I would recommend it to others.

Historia
Psychotherapist Michael Pond is no stranger to the devastating consequences of alcoholism. He has helped hundreds of people conquer their addictions, but this knowledge did not prevent his own near-demise. In this riveting memoir, he recounts how he lost his practice, his home, and his family - all because of his drinking.

Riveting Story, But Conclusion Lacks
Revisado: 09-26-24
The story of the fall from grace is well told by Michael Pond and honestly reads like a "Speaker Meeting" from a 12-Step Program. The descriptive, raw re-telling is sure to grab anyone's attention, especially those trying to understand the life and thought process of an addict.
Pond does a great job pointing out the root issue of a majority of 12-step program groups and how it can keep those with dual diagnosis trapped in their toxic cycles. I hoped to hear his "ah-ha!" moment where things clicked, but instead fell flat or perhaps "to be continued."
I appreciate the end shedding light on alternatives to 12-step programs and progress being made in addiction treatment; however, the very end felt like an infomercial for drug alternatives. It sheds little to no light on emotional trauma therapy in concurrence with step-to-extinction or abstinence approaches.

Historia
Marc Lewis's relationship with drugs began in a New England boarding school where, as a bullied and homesick fifteen-year-old, he made brief escapes from reality by way of cough medicine, alcohol, and marijuana. In Berkeley, California, in its hippie heyday, he found methamphetamine and LSD and heroin. He sniffed nitrous oxide in Malaysia and frequented Calcutta's opium dens. Ultimately, though, his journey took him where it takes most addicts: into a life of addiction, desperation, deception, and crime.

Insightful for Understanding Addiction
Revisado: 09-08-24
Whether you’re in recovery, know someone struggling with recovery or addiction, or just want to learn more about how the mind and addiction work this book is an insightful retelling of one addicts life. It can get pretty specific in scientific terminology at certain points but not so in-depth that it loses the story. Highly recommended.

Helped Me Understand My Addiction
Revisado: 07-09-24
I am in active recovery and stumbled upon Dr. Gabor Mate's work by chance via a YouTube recommendation. I wish I would have found not only this book, but his work sooner. It has helped me understand my relapses and moving addiction from one thing to another. It helped me finally understand not why the addiction, but why the pain was the question I should have been looking to answer and heal. Whether it's alcohol, drugs, shopping, attention, or any other addiction this is a must-listen.

Good Information, Performance Hinders
Revisado: 03-31-24
This book contained some really good information for those beginning the healing journey. For those who have done therapy, they might find the first half as a refresher. The 2nd half I found very enjoyable.
This is a slog of a listen, which is done no favors by the reading performance.

Equally Powerful As It's Predecessor
Revisado: 03-17-24
This sequel to "The Courage to be Disliked" is just as every bit as good. Like the first book, I left this feeling enlightened and challenged to re-think my views of the past and living present. However, I did find myself wanting to shout "Are you here to understand or just pick a fight?" with the reading of the student. Which I understand what the author intended as challenging the views, but for 6 hours of reading it can get annoying. Overall, I don't regret buying or investing the time in this book. It is worth it.

Historia
The Courage to Be Disliked, already an enormous best seller in Asia with more than 3.5 million copies sold, demonstrates how to unlock the power within yourself to be the person you truly want to be. Using the theories of Alfred Adler, one of the three giants of 20th-century psychology, The Courage to Be Disliked follows an illuminating conversation between a philosopher and a young man. The philosopher explains to his pupil how each of us is able to determine our own life, free from the shackles of past experiences, doubts, and the expectations of others.

Only One Bad Thing Kept From 5 Stars
Revisado: 03-11-24
I've been in recovery for over a year now, filled with a handful of relapses. I kept thinking "I can move forward because of the things that happened to me." Well, this book thankfully has completely shifted my mindset in how I view my past, feel about my future, and am grateful for today. The ONLY complaint I have is after a while the student gets annoying, but I'm sure that probably says something deeper I need to work on lol you will not regret buying or listening to this book.

Those Starting to Heal Will Love it
Revisado: 03-07-24
I've been going to therapy and life coaching sessions and about 3/4 from the start is some routine things you'll already here in those sessions. That said, if you're new to the healing journey or looking for a refresher this is great. For me, I found the last 1/4 of the book the most useful. I like the personality the narrator brings to this book. Highly recommended overall.

Good For Starters
Revisado: 03-06-24
This is a great introduction for those who are navigating forgiveness with trauma, guilt, shame, and others for the first time. Otherwise it's a lot of repetition and lifestory based. I'm also a Spiritual person and a lot of this book leaned heavily on Christianity. Not a bad thing by any means, but definitely worth noting if a reader isn't deep in religion or jaded.
