Brilliant book; near-brilliant reading
Revisado: 10-05-24
The performance is the thing. She’s got a solid B+/A-, 4.5 really … and the book — as insightful into the human as a Dostoevsky’Big 4’ … a diff is the this is far more abt what married life means, is; most of D’s people aren’t hitched.
Highly rec’d

Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

A great American novel
Revisado: 08-10-24
Story excellent, narrator sounds a bit like Peter Sarsgaard, musical interludes SUPER screechy and annoying.

Historia
One of the most valuable spaces for an artist is the inner life—the sacred place where, outside of the constraints of time and space, meaning is extracted from raw experience and fashioned into art. In this timely new essay, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Russo discusses the work writers do as they sift through experience and work to cultivate rich interior lives. For authors, this often involves performing triage, a constant assessment of events that helps determine what’s useful for a story and potentially enduring.

Basic, and barely abt its claimed subject
Revisado: 12-29-22
Did not need 20 mins — half the essay — on a pandemic we all took part in. College sophomore level notions on interior time. Consecutive sentences that equate ‘introvert’ with ‘socially awkward’ when it’s simply how many people are and has as much claim to being okay as it’s opposite. Payoff not worth the effort.
And I like Richard Russo’s work quite a bit.
Shut up and write.

Historia
The quiet 1960s midwestern life of the Land family is upended when son Davy kills two marauders who have come to harm the family. The morning of his sentencing, Davy (a hero to some, a cold-blooded murderer to others) escapes from his cell, and the Lands set out in search of him. Their journey is touched by serendipity and the kindness of strangers, and they cover territory even more extraordinary than the Badlands, where they search for Davy from their Airstream trailer.

The loveliest book in the world
Revisado: 02-07-19
Read this several times, listened to it a couple more, gifted a dozen or more of its identical siblings.
Redemptive fiction at its finest; faith not on its sleeve bit infused and entwined in its people, pages ...
Language of intense effort and angels.
The story and overall ratings for these reasons. The performance a ‘4’ bec Chad Lowe sounds like Reuben but gets many cadences wrong.
Highly recommended.
