Historia
The Traitor Host of Horus Lupercal tightens its iron grip on the Palace of Terra, and one by one the walls and bastions begin to crumple and collapse. Rogal Dorn, Praetorian of Terra, redoubles his efforts to keep the relentless enemy at bay, but his forces are vastly outnumbered and hopelessly outgunned. Dorn simply cannot defend everything. Any chance of survival now requires sacrifice, but what battles dare he lose so that others can be won? Is there one tactical stroke, one crucial combat, that could turn the tide forever and win the war outright?

Arguably the best book in the entire Horus Heresy, Saturnine nails it on every front. Incredible action, emotional highs and lows, reintegration of interesting characters, and a perfect setup for future books. Abnett has his masterpiece.

Historia
The war for the fate of mankind blazes on. Though the outer defences have fallen, the walls of the Palace itself remain inviolate as Rogal Dorn, the Praetorian of Terra himself, uses every known stratagem and ploy to keep Horus' vast armies at bay. In Perturabo, the Traitor siegebreaker, Dorn faces an adversary worthy of his skill. A terrible, grinding attrition ensues. The crucial battle for the Lion's Gate spaceport is at the heart of this conflict. With it in their possession, the Traitors can land their most devastating weapons on Terran soil. Dorn knows it must not fall.

This felt a little like a filler but it was still a good book. The primary side plot should've been dropped but has a great ending.

Poor writing drags down an interesting story. Characters are reintroduced with little introduction making their actions confusing to even those experienced with the Horus Hersey. A novel named Mortis actively avoids the Titan storyline as the Blood Angels, loyal Primarches, Purterabo, the Immortals, Cult of the Emperor, and even general soldiers get more impactful read time. Great voice acting and multiple interesting plot twists feel wasted in this read. John French with another Siege of Terra stinker.

One of the best Horus Hersey novels and how the Siege of Terra should’ve started. Plot lines of primarchs to the lowest ranked soldiers were expertly interwoven. Due to the immense pressure of the situation the primarchs have finally been humanized… or completely turned into monsters. Very excited for the rest of the series now.

Not a necessary HH novel but one of the better ones. Opening was standard warfare that bog down most HH novels. Plethora of storylines merge together well thematically. I wasn’t sure how they were going to pull off the climax but they nailed it which made care about a legion and Primach I had no interest in. Wise to include the Garro/Knights storyline for padding and juxtaposition.

Of all the Legiones Astartes, the White Scars of Jaghatai Khan remain the most enigmatic and elusive. Born of a civilisation that prizes honour, speed and fearsome loyalty, their allegiance has yet remained unclear even as the galaxy is torn apart by Horus's treachery, and both sides have apparently counted them among their potential allies in the war to come.

Is Scars critical reading for the overall Horus Hersey story? No.
While far from flawless, Scars is one of the best Horus Hersey novels. Interesting glimpse into maybe the oddest legion, which is saying a lot. Story skillfully weaves between multiple legions and storylines while only occasionally becoming confusing. Each storyline does payoff in the end and builds momentum to the climax of the story. I was disliking the narrator at first but as more characters are introduced his skills shine.
