I have read all of Trudi Canavan’s books and have really enjoyed The Millenium’s Rule books so far. They are a nice blend of fun fantasy fiction and moral lessons. This third book was no exception.

The only complaint I have is that the two readers pronounce the names of characters differently, making it quite difficult to fixture out exactly which characters they are referencing at certain times throughout the reading. It’s really confusing. You would think they would at least figure out the same pronunciation of names before reading the books!

Beautifully written and gorgeously read.

I first read Eat, Pray, Love a year or so after it came out. It moved me, but not in an earth shattering way. When the movie came out, I bought it. Between the two, I was greatly inspired to make several life changes. This book showed me that not only was I not alone, I was amongst friends.

Eat, Pray, Love Made Me Do It is funny, difficult, cry inducing, and humbling. Where I do disagree with some of Elizabeth Gilbert's motivations, I was happy to hear the stories of others who read her memoir and were also inspired to make a life change in order to truly find their direction.

I would recommend this and the original to anyone looking for the inspiration to make a change, however small, in the context of their life's purpose. We are all looking for fulfillment, and reading the search from others is awe inspiring.

I enjoyed the cast and the writing and will listen to this over and over.

Thank you Liz.

As one of my favorite all time fantasy novels, I was intrigued when I saw that Simon Vance performed this. He is one of my favorite Audible readers and I decided to, after many years, revisit the world of the Palm and the tyrants by listening to Vance's smooth voice read a book I already loved.

Nothing about the book or the performance disappointed. I can say that there are plot devices in the novel, but I don't care. It's such a beautiful story that they can be ignored. It is fantasy after all.

The characters are complex and relatable and the story flows nicely. I found myself, as always, crying in parts, especially Dianora's story. The juxtaposition of her life's wants and loves is so fierce and difficult to comprehend. It is also in stark contrast to the emotions running through the Alessan/Devin story. They are both moving towards something and stagnating at different times. I enjoyed that aspect.

As for the underlying themes here, memory and loss and identity, they are beautifully described and portrayed. To imagine one's own named being ripped out of the world...heartbreaking.

I highly recommend this book and this version!

As an avid Neil Gaiman fan, I now only listen to his books if he is also the narrator. His quirky writing is only amplified and better brought to life by his velvety and rich voice reminiscent of a young Alan Rickman.

Gaiman is a true literary artist, a wordsmith, and this book is honestly one of his best. Every time he sets out to write a book, I believe it is a children's book that is written for adults. Like He Graveyard Book, The Ocean at the End of the Lane evokes childish innocence and a textural beauty that can only be seen through a child's eyes. The struggle of fantasy and reality and the juxtaposition of what imagination is to an adult versus a child is the true artistry here and in most of Gaiman's darker works.

I loved the premise here. The tangled mess of memories and the knowledge of imagination and reality being completely intertwined make this fascinating and haunting. Gaiman doesn't shy away from dark topics and terror. He allows his characters to describe their fear and their shortcomings unabashedly and without apology. It makes them easily relatable.

This book was another that I had trouble walking away from even to go to work! I just loved the story and wanted to hear what came next. I would recommend this to anyone of any age, as long as they are past the point of overactive imagination that leads to nightmares. So for most people, around twelve or so, but for avid readers and artists with their heads in the clouds, twenty two. Or thirty depending...

I bought this for a road trip with my family on a two-for-one credit deal (I am one of two adult children to still married parents and we all vacation together once a year.) I was pleasantly surprised by the content, the performance, and the writing.

The book flows nicely. There are a few choppy spots and hurried passages, but for the most part it was engaging and made me both laugh and cry along with my mother. We greatly enjoyed the book and the length was perfect for our trip. We only had to stay in the car for eight extra minutes to hear the ending which was a pleasant little coincidence.

The story is heartfelt and moving and fun. I liked the character's personalities although I found the description of Maya's communications as a child a little far fetched.

Overall the book was a great read and I'm very happy I purchased it.

Would you listen to Fortunately, the Milk again? Why?

I really enjoy Neil Gaiman and his reading of his own work. This was no exception. A tall tale told to children from their father, it reminded me of my childhood, and that's just wonderful when listening to a children's book!

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the way the children questioned the father.

Which character – as performed by Neil Gaiman – was your favorite?

The narrator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.
