Historia
In a faraway land where members of the royal family are named for the virtues they embody, one young boy will become a walking enigma.Born on the wrong side of the sheets, Fitz, son of Chilvary Farseer, is a royal bastard, cast out into the world, friendless and lonely. Only his magical link with animals - the old art known as the Wit - gives him solace and companionship. But the Wit, if used too often, is a perilous magic, and one abhorred by the nobility. So when Fitz is finally adopted into the royal household, he must give up his old ways.

Upper-class narrator
Revisado: 03-14-22
Never heard a narrator with an upper-class accent before. Very off-putting. Does a reasonably good job on the whole. The story has more intrigue than might be assumed from the coming-of-age premise. The universe feels a bit limited though. Hope the next volumes dispel that impression.

Oh, the infinite struggle of angsty teens and young adults vs. adults-who-just-don't-get-it. In a postapocalyptic world with romantic vampires.
The first 3-4 chapters have the most mush in them (a 1.5h struggle). The story opens up slightly and very progressively after that. I'm glad I went through with it, but wouldn't want to do it again.
Very solid production quality. The form is radio drama, hence only occasional narration through internal monologues. Meant to be listened to with your best headphones, so that the noise becomes binaural ambiance. Requires some concentration.
30mins of end credits (detailed/repeated for every one of the 12 chapters).

Just as great as Mythos!
Revisado: 02-13-22
More of Mr Fry's jovial but infinitely rich adaptations of the Greek myths that center on the heroes, from Perseus to Theseus via Heracles, and all the others that were added between the stage production and the book. Hey, we do not know what regional Greek accents sounded like, so why not cockneys and Aberdonian lumberjacks?

Historia
The Greek myths are amongst the greatest stories ever told, passed down through millennia and inspiring writers and artists as varied as Shakespeare, Michelangelo, James Joyce and Walt Disney. They are embedded deeply in the traditions, tales and cultural DNA of the West. You'll fall in love with Zeus, marvel at the birth of Athena, wince at Cronus and Gaia's revenge on Ouranos, weep with King Midas and hunt with the beautiful and ferocious Artemis.

Wonderful
Revisado: 02-03-22
As Mr Fry says himself in the afterword -- he is doing his bit to keep these myths alive, just like so many did before him. This version is PG-13, but also mischievous, subtly cultured, and the lively embellishments are fantastic! Also, the rendering is superb, and I'm quite sure that to continue the oral tradition that first characterized such works, the audiobook form is the best!

Old recording, great accents
Revisado: 01-27-22
The audio quality is poor (recording from 1989). The famous narrator, here using the name Frederick Davidson, produces a variety of fantastic Scottish accents, a true pleasure to the ear. However many structural intonations are very strange until one gets used to them.

When Brian De Palma agreed to allow Julie Salamon unlimited access to the film production of Tom Wolfe's best-selling book The Bonfire of the Vanities, both director and journalist must have felt like they were on to something big. How could it lose? But instead Salamon got a front-row seat at the Hollywood disaster of the decade.

Brilliant book, horribly read
Revisado: 11-21-21
It's a testament to how interesting, insightful and well-constructed the book is, that one can (just) survive the author's abominable reading of it. Nothing in my 100+ Audible library compares in terms of flat tone, lack of emotion, absence of proper breaks, etc. But as I said, the book itself is a masterpiece.

Historia
The outcast youth Ishmael, succumbing to wanderlust during a dreary New England autumn, signs up for passage aboard a whaling ship. Historia
Hidden in the heart of the old city of Barcelona is the 'cemetery of lost books', a labyrinthine library of obscure and forgotten titles that have long gone out of print. To this library, a man brings his 10-year-old son, Daniel, one cold morning in 1945. Daniel is allowed to choose one book from the shelves and pulls out La Sombra del Viento by Julian Carax. But as he grows up, several people seem inordinately interested in his find.

For gothic horror and literature fans
Revisado: 03-01-19
This book is for fans of gothic horror with a fixation on poètes maudits. I was glad of the great historical backdrop. The language is brilliant and the English translation is amazing, as well as the performance, which is particularly respectful of accents.

Historia
Here for the first time, in rich human, political, and scientific detail, is the complete story of how the bomb was developed, from the turn-of-the-century discovery of the vast energy locked inside the atom to the dropping of the first bombs on Japan. Few great discoveries have evolved so swiftly - or have been so misunderstood. From the theoretical discussions of nuclear energy to the bright glare of Trinity, there was a span of hardly more than 25 years.

When she becomes queen, all Europe turns against England.

Warning: no more architecture!
Revisado: 12-17-17
Came for the architecture, didn't get any, but stayed for the (very simplified) history. In fact history buffs will have many passages spoiled to them, although Follett reimagines them by inserting the characters in just about plausible ways. Only nominally a follow-up to its predecessors; the style is very different, as a matter of choice, but the main drawback is that there is never any *real* suspense. A fun read anyhow, and a great performance.
