Political lectures
Revisado: 01-21-25
Excellent premise. And the next time I’m craving long-winded lectures about racism in British society that completely tear my attention away from that excellent premise, I’ll attempt to finish listening. So. Many. Statistics. YAWN.

Historia
In 2059, two vastly different groups of people portrayed by the compelling trio of Brendan Fraser (Academy Award winner), Luke Kirby (Emmy Award winner), and Vanessa Sears (Dora Award winner) undergo cryonic suspension. While their bodies are frozen, their minds, still active and awake, are uploaded into a massive quantum computer. The first group are all astronauts, about to leave Earth on a one-way interstellar colonization mission. The second group consists of convicted murderers and volunteers who elect to serve their sentences in a virtual-reality prison.

Excellent futurism comes with current politics
Revisado: 12-28-23
Interesting premise and will make a great streaming show. The actors are terrific! The author’s heavy handed ticking off of politically correct topics was distracting and kept pulling me out of the story so I quit listening. Global warming, a conservative bully (is there any other kind?), “dead naming” a mentally ill character etc. all have their time and place, but I prefer to consider those topics when I’m not indulging in escapism. YMMV.

Historia
Twenty-one-year-old Hardy “Hardly” Reed—good-natured, easygoing, usually stoned—is drifting through life. A minimum-wage scare actor at an amusement park, he avoids unnecessary effort and unrealistic ambitions. Then one day he notices two children, around six or seven, sitting all alone on a bench. Hardly checks if they’re okay and sees injuries on both children. Someone is hurting these kids. He reports the incident to Child Protective Service. That should be the end of it. After all, Hardly's not good at looking out for himself so the last thing he wants to do is look out for anyone else.

Historia
When Wynn and Jack decide to canoe the Maskwa River in Northern Canada, they anticipate long days of leisurely paddling and picking blueberries and nights of stargazing and reading paperback Westerns. But a wildfire making its way across the forest adds unexpected urgency to the journey. When they hear a man and woman arguing on the fog-shrouded riverbank and decide to warn them about the fire, their search for the pair turns up nothing and no one. But: The next day, a man appears on the river, paddling alone. Is this the man they heard? And, if he is, where is the woman?

Started great; deeply unsatisfying ending
Revisado: 09-29-23
Soo disappointing to be totally invested in a book, enjoying the story and narration only to be smacked with stereotypical Texans Are Evil and a unsatisfying, jumbled, ragged ending. The author semi-foreshadows his ending, it's ugly and hopeless and yuck.
I thoroughly enjoyed the author's latest book The Ranger, which is why I purchased The River. But after The River I don't trust Mr. Heller to follow through with satisfying believable endings to otherwise well-written novels.
Kudos to the narrator, excellent job.

Historia
There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

Connolly succumbs
Revisado: 11-14-21
Long time fan of Bosch et al, and Connolly’s writing. The Dark Hours starts strong. Interesting story, spectacular performances from both narrators. Unfortunately, Connolly has succumbed to Woke. No details necessary, if you’re woke you’ll nod and agree and if you’re sane you’ll roll your eyes and skip over the political and plandemic BS. I’ll hesitate before purchasing the next installment, despite Connolly teasing a future novel featuring Maddie-the-LAPD-rookie.
Woke politics forcibly remove the reader/listener from escapist FICTION, catapulting us back to a current reality at least 50% of us are hoping to briefly escape. No respite here.

About 25% too long with strikingly unlikeable characters. Skip this one and head straight to the various novels written with his father, Jonathon Kellerman.

A convoluted mess
Revisado: 11-23-19
This book has an interesting start, but the truly awful narration continually pulled me out of the story. The “devil” who should be voiced with menace or at least gravitas, sounds like that whiny know it all who sat behind you in 5th grade who would Not Shut Up. When the global warming BS kicked in I finally gave up. (It’s called weather.)

Except for the tiresome and wholly unbelievable “Russian meddlng” political sidetrack, a nice addition to this series. By the time American novelists catch up to the real external threat to the United States, we’ll be speaking Chinese.
