Historia
Seth Andrews idolized Rush Limbaugh. He listened to Glenn Beck. He read Ann Coulter. He watched Fox News. He was an evangelical Christian once tethered to right-wing media, which constantly warned of an attack on American values by liberals and secular humanists. Today, Seth is a liberal and secular humanist. This audiobook explores the Fox News culture, which both reflects and informs American conservatism, shaping public opinion on important issues like religion, government, race, foreign policy, war, protest, LGBT rights, and the Constitution.

I have some thoughts on that last chapter, but I don't feel like sorting them out into something that makes sense outside my head.
Overall, a great book. I was in a similar boat growing up, though thankfully not as extreme, and getting out of that mindset isn't always easy - but it is the right thing to do.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

I've never thought of the racial hierarchy as a caste system, but it absolutely is.
Also, there are bits of history included in the book that I've never known about - most horrifically the lynching postcards.

Historia
Critics of contemporary economics complain that belief in free markets - among economists as well as many ordinary citizens - is a form of religion. And, it turns out, that in a deeper, more historically grounded sense there is something to that idea. Contrary to the conventional historical view of economics as an entirely secular product of the Enlightenment, Benjamin M. Friedman demonstrates that religion exerted a powerful influence from the outset.

I feel as though this book covered a lot of stuff that doesn't really relate to the topic at hand. But then again, I also feel as though I didn't understand much of it and I can't tell if that's because I was bored, it was poorly written, or something else. 😹

Maggie Patel has landed her dream job at The New York Spectator; or, it would be, if she could get a decent story assignment. When a career-making interview finally lands on her desk, it’s with the last person she’d ever want to see again — Edward, the Crown Prince of Bairmorne...and her long-ago friend.

cute
Revisado: 12-20-21
This popped up with all the holiday stories and I thought it was one, too, but it's not. Just a rom-com story.
It was cute, rather cliched (which isn't a negative for me), and mostly fun. I enjoyed it.

From the New York Times best-selling author of Christmas Jars comes a powerful story of friendship and faith. Marva Ferguson has a very personal Christmas tradition that happens the day after Christmas. As a widow, the tradition means more to her now than it ever did. Her newest neighbor, nine-year-old Charlee, loves Christmas, too. But her family has fallen on hard times, and things get worse when Charlee becomes critically ill.

Ugh... This was such a heavy-handed and self-righteous Christian propaganda book. I should have stopped when I realized what it was, but I kept hoping there would be something redeemable.
And you know, if the message was just "be a good person and help others less fortunate year round, not just at Christmas", then I could have gotten behind that. But that's not what the message was.
I even liked the characters, for the most part, but I can get past the heavy-handedness of the religious aspects.
This book tanked my holiday mood. Which sucks because it was the last holiday book on my list. Currently looking for another one. A better one.

This story seems more like it's supposed to be the start of a longer piece rather than a stand-alone shorter story.
Overall, it's okay. But it's set during the London Blitz in WWII, so it has a rather depressing setting even if the story is, overall, nice.
This did not boost my holiday mood.

Thanksgiving Story!
Revisado: 12-20-21
Thanksgiving and Christmas are close enough for me to be okay using a Thanksgiving story to boost my holiday mood. And it mostly worked.
Generally, I enjoyed the story. It had some very depressing moments, but the ending pulled it together for me.
It boosted my holiday mood.

Merry Winters has the holiday blues. She's spent the last year learning to love herself, and now she's ready to find the right guy. But the pickings are slim in Mistletoe, Idaho, and it’s just her luck that the man who catches her eye is the stoic new foreman at her family’s Christmas tree farm. This is the sequel to "Nick and Noel's Christmas Playlist" and it was a bit of an accident that I listened to them in order. I didn't realize they were a series because I wasn't paying attention. However, when I realized it was a sequel, I was pretty excited. Which told me that I liked the first one even more than I had originally though. Haha!
Again, I could have done without the graphic sex scenes, but I'm looking forward to the next one in the series - because there will pretty obviously be more.
This one also boosted my holiday mood.

Nick Winters and Noel Carter have known each other their whole lives. After years of shared family holidays, working together on the Winters’ Christmas tree farm, and being each other's safe haven, they wouldn't dream of crossing the line from friends to something more.... But when Nick comes home for the holidays after serving overseas and finds that his long-term girlfriend has decided to get her stocking stuffed elsewhere, Noel is there to pick him up and show him that instead of a Blue Christmas he can still have a Wonderful Christmastime without his cheating ex.

So they jumped FAST from "we're just BFFs" to "okay, but maybe we kiss" or whatever. Like, okay, maybe, but really? Maybe that's just unbelievable to me as I'm asexual, but still...
And while I could have down without the sex scenes, the story itself was fun and enjoyable.
This story lifted my holiday mood.

When Jenny inherits her estranged grandmother’s cottage in Sherwood Forest, she has nothing to lose - no money, no job, no friends, no family to speak of, and zero self-respect. Things can only get better.... Her grumpy but decidedly handsome new neighbour, Mack, has a habit of bestowing unsolicited good deeds on her. And when Jenny is welcomed into a rather unusual book club, life seems to finally be getting more interesting. Instead of reading, the members pledge to complete individual challenges before Christmas.

not just for Christmas
Revisado: 12-20-21
This one might be titled "Christmas Every Day" but it isn't just about Christmas. It was pretty good, actually. And, in my opinion, the biggest take-away of the story is that if you're surrounded by a community that cares about you, you'll have a pretty good life. I can get behind that message.
This story boosted my holiday mood quite a bit.
