Historia
Virginia Woolf's semi-biographical novel, inspired by her life changing love affair with Vita Sackville-West, takes us on an exhilarating, fantastical roller coaster, tracing 400 years of English history, in the company of her shape-shifting, gender-bending, time-travelling hero Orlando, whose inner conflicts and triumphs challenge our preconceptions of the nature of love, the battle of the sexes, posing socal and metaphysical questions including what we now call climate change.

Wonderful narration. Curious book.

I suppose one should always expect the unexpected from Virginia Woolf. This book was delightfully whimsical at times and quite dragging at others.

Historia
Published in instalments in 1859, The Woman in White is often considered to be one of the very first detective novels. Although critics weren’t impressed at the time, the novel proved to be a hit with the public and has since gone on to become one of the timeless classics of the Victorian era. Following the adventures of Walter Hartright, this is a story of sleuthing, inheritance, ghosts and mistaken identity and was recently the subject of a hit TV adaptation by the BBC.

Good narration. Terrible book.
Revisado: 02-05-22
I read a lot of classics I did not like but could at least see why they were classics. This book is just terrible.
The story is painfully dragged out. The mystery part I couldn't care less about. The epistolary style did not work for me in Dracula and it worked even less for me here.
Overall, this book took me forever to read – mostly because I had to force myself to continue – and I would recommend it to nobody.

Soon Daniel stands in the crossfire between a murderous porn director; a corrupt cop with a quick trigger finger; and his own former employer, a racket boss who isn't entirely human.

I actually listened to the whole thing while having a bad case of flu, and must say that it lightened the experience for me. -> So, not a difficult read.
Enjoyable and fast (but also nothing special).

That’s when she slams into his back and he falls in front of the train. Margot’s clients all lie to her, but one lie cost her family and freedom.

This was an Audible Freebie, which in retrospect should have made me suspicious...
Alright, I suppose, is the best way to describe it.
I cannot say that the story gripped me, but the narrator made it easy to listen to the end. It helps that the story is short enough that even if you do not love it, you are not there long.
Overall, gift horses and mouths and all that...
PS I'm starting to suspect that I do not like thrillers as a genre, though I am sure there must be good ones somewhere out there.

Historia
gentle romance begins innocently enough in the stalls of a London theatre where Catherine is enjoying her ninth and Christopher his thirty-sixth visit to the same play. He is a magnificent young man with flame-coloured hair. She is the sweetest little thing in a hat. There is just one complication: Christopher is 25, while Catherine is just a little bit older. Flattered by the passionate attentions of youth, Catherine, with marriage and motherhood behind her, is at first circumspect, but finally succumbs to her lover's charms.

Historia
This Edwardian social comedy explores love and prim propriety among an eccentric cast of characters assembled in an Italian pensione and in a corner of Surrey, England. A charming young Englishwoman, Lucy Honeychurch, faints into the arms of a fellow Britisher when she witnesses a murder in a Florentine piazza. Attracted to this man, George Emerson---who is entirely unsuitable and whose father just may be a Socialist - Lucy is soon at war with the snobbery of her class and her own conflicting desires.

Great narration of an alright book.
Revisado: 06-27-21
The book is alright:
- The plot is alright if not unimaginative.
- The social commentary is alright if not too tame.
- The main heroine is not alright, I dare say irritating, as you'd be hard pressed to find a less self aware and free-thinking person in the history of western literature.
PS I tried different narrators for this book and Steven Crossley is by far the most enjoyable.

Historia
Countess Ellen Olenska, separated from her European husband, returns to old New York society. She bears with her an independence and an awareness of life which stirs the educated sensitivity of the charming Newland Archer, engaged to be married to her cousin, May Welland. Though he accepts the society's standards and rules he is acutely aware of their limitations. He knows May will assure him a conventional future but Ellen, scandalously separated from her husband, forces Archer to question his values and beliefs.

Perfect narration
Revisado: 06-22-21
I liked it, and I didn't like it, and I am glad that Archer Newland's prison of a world isn't mine, and I wonder (with an inspired sense of dread) what the 19th century New York vesion of me would have been like.
But anyhow, this book is so very clever: every word imbued with meaning, significance, irony, foreboding – not a single line wasted. This book is also so very sad, and not because of its star-crossed love affair, but because there is nothing sadder than the sheer vivacity of life and spirit slowly stiffled into submission and regret.

Molly Gibson, the only daughter of a widowed doctor in the small provincial town of Hollingford, lost her mother when she was a child. Her father remarries wanting to give Molly the woman's presence he feels she lacks. To Molly, any stepmother would have been a shock, but the new Mrs. Gibson is a self-absorbed, petty widow, and Molly's unhappiness is compounded by the realisation that her father has come to regret his second marriage.

Enjoyable to the end despite its length
Revisado: 06-08-21
The story is rather ordinary in its scope and yet I found myself rooting and feeling for the main character, Molly, and otherwise enjoying this carefully crafted social satire.
It is a shame that the story was never finished not because we cannot guess how it is to end, but rather because it would have been a pleasure to read the absent final scenes – hinted at in the editor's notes – from Gaskell's delightfully satirical point of view.
A perfect summer read overall!

The author scopes out the project to assure the listener that this is not as challenging as they may fear. He states that there are only 13 punctuation marks in English, and only three are truly troublesome: the sentence bridges which include the comma, colon, and semi-colon. As the author suggests, you should focus on the tracks that really matter, the sentence bridges, and give less attention to the other 10.

Historia
