Historia
In his masterful work, The Abolition of Man, C. S. Lewis observed how modern education was changing our conception of what it means to be human. By cutting off students from the transcendent values of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty, modern schools ceased cultivating virtue in students and instead communicated a mechanistic vision of the world that viewed students as products to be engineered. Lewis argued that we must recover these transcendent values in order to prevent the dehumanizing tendency in modern education.

A very clear understanding of the history of thought between the worldview of the Greeks and the early Christians. They are deep ideas, but I appreciate being challenged to think and the opportunity to think the thoughts after the founders of civilizations. I plan to reread and buy the paper copy and mark it up and host a book group to discuss it again. The descriptions of the understanding of God’s infinite nature, the way we experience math and music, and the symbolic use of the Sun, trees, colors, etc raised my heart and eyes to worship.

I should never have doubted. Alcott doesn’t disappoint and has another clever, sweet, intelligent, and inspiring story to treasure. The patience and intentionality of the romances are such helpful examples, but without preaching or moralizing. I want to be a friend like Rose and make the most with my days! I can’t wait to share this with my daughters.

Jamie MacFarlane has returned a hero from the Great War but with a stubborn chest wound. Historia
Elizabeth Ann is being carefully brought up by her Aunt Frances. Aunt Frances shares in all Elizabeth Ann's fears and slights, walks her to and from school each day, and conscientiously follows the most modern theories on child-rearing. She is the original helicopter parent. Not surprisingly, at nine years old Elizabeth Ann is timid and shy, friendless, and completely dependent on her doting aunt. Then an emergency occurs, and the fearful little girl is temporarily sent to other relatives who live on a farm in Vermont.

I love the way the author tells the story without drawing her own conclusions. She shares the effects of different parenting on Betsy and what brought her strength and confidence. It shows how she grows up giving the reader the opportunity to experience it and make their own reflections.
