One of the best books I have EVER heard. Like the Martian but on steroids! Andy Weir is a master.

I have read - or listened to - all of the Bennie Griessel books by Deon Meyer in both English and Afrikaans. I absolutely love this series - the writing is top notch and, as a South African, the local aspect is highly cherished.

I especially enjoy the Afrikaans audiobook editions narrated by Nic de Jaager.

Sadly, the current version of "Prooi" (Prey) on Audible has some major audio quality issues in the beginning chapters that make listening difficult and are a downright pain. In one there is a machine-like noise and page turn/other background noises hearable every time the narrator speaks. In others, there is a kind of microphone howl and/or high-pitched whine whenever he talks.

I have called NB Publishers (producers of this edition), brought this to their attention and requested feedback. Let's see what happens and if they provide a better audio copy to Audible.

It really is a pity - Deon Meyer and Nic de Jaager are both incredibly talented but the audio quality of this particular audiobook disappoints.

The story is fantastic!

I'm not particularly good at reviewing books but am nonetheless reasonably confident to state that this piece of writing belongs to the upper echelons of contemporary literature.

The story takes the reader on an incredible journey through the protagonist's past and present, Bombay, culture, philosophy, friendship, joy, sorrow, war, peace and, not least, his own heart.

Everyone: young adults and older should read this book at least once in lifetime, (preferably sooner rather than later!) even if the genre or synopsis doesn't appeal to you at first. Open your mind, give it a chance, be blown away and learn the most beautiful of wisdoms.

I cannot praise this book highly enough and consider it as one of my top 10 books ever read. The narrater is beyond incredible: have not yet heard such flawless narration with incredible versatility in terms of accents, voices on Audible anywhere else.

Even though Afrikaans is my third language, I got hooked on Deon Meyer whilst reading 'Blood Safari' in Afrikaans.

Time and circumstance prevent me from reading at the moment so I decided to give the 'Bennie Griessl' series a go and started 'Devil's Peak' (narrated in English by Simon Vance). That story was absolutely amazing and albeit professional, I absolutely hated the narrator's countless and repeated mispronounciation of South African names, places, lingo, etc. It made me cringe.

I was thrilled at being able to listen to '13 Uur', the second book in series (narrated by Nic de Jaager), in Afrikaans. The story and performance are stellar. I don't think I enjoyed a crime thriller this much in a long time and loved being able to listen to it in the author's native tongue. For me, Meyer's work belongs in the upper echelons of crime thrillers next to those by Stieg Larsson and Jo Nesbo.

I am very angry and disappointed that the next book in the series, '7 Dae' is not available in Afrikaans (by de Jaager) although the fourth book, 'Kobra', is.

Now, if I want to continue listening to the series, I have to force myself to again listen to Vance's performance in English although I'd much prefer de Jaager in Afrikaans. The irony is, that there is another version of '7 Days' narrated by what is clearly a South African - correct pronunciation and all - but this title is not for sale in my country, South Africa.

Authors, publishers and Audible: please get your act together for the sake of your listeners!!!

I just loved listening to this book and boy is it a long book! However, the story is captivating and thrilling from the very beginning to the end and keeps you in suspense all the time. The narrator, Sean Barrett, is fantastic and a master at emulating the different characters' voices. The very frequent references to contemporary people and concepts are witty and often extremely humourous! The writer's research in terms of the locations depicted, in this book Hong Kong, Oslo and the Congo are meticulous and vividly described - you can just imagine being there! The book's main character Harry Hole is...well, there is only one Harry Hole! I read swedish author Stieg Larsson's Millenium Trilogy and absolutely loved it. I am very tempted to say that the norwegian Jo Nesbo is almost a notch better (sorry Stieg, R.I.P.)!
