The first installment of this series was excellent. Very gripping. Kept me wanting more! THIS follow up is, in a word, BORING. Simon King is continually apologizing for the boredom, saying "I know this is not what you were expecting..." Well, no duh! One can only take so many "Toby asked for a cup of tea..." in a book! My count, until I quit the book, was four times. Four times we were treated to Toby asking for a cup of tea. And those were the HIGHLIGHTS of this crapola. Simon King, obviously, had nothing to share. So, this begs the question: WHY write the piece of dung at all???? Todd Waites is a solid narrator, and the ONLY reason I kept listening as long as I did: Story Book 8, Tuesday, January 1st. Do yourself a favor, skip this volume. Waste not your credits here, there TRULY is nothing here. For anyone.

Those were wasted years. What a stupid story. Returning for a credit. This is the ONLY Will Patton narrated book I could not finish. DRECK.

All you need to know about this family, is that Mary Margaret Cecil took her family across the country in a wagon after the civil war for the SOLE purpose of “quitting” her ne’er do well husband. That’s it. The ONLY value in this story is the narration by Will Patton. Other than that this story is not worth the credit. Lonesome Dove, it ain’t.

The way the "facts" are presented, Olivia Hawk killed Ashlynn Steele. Nothing I have heard through out the horrible story has changed that fact for me. Olivia did it. Her hapless father, Chris Hawk refuses to believe this. I am always amazed that parents are eager to excuse their offspring for the most egregious actions. This happens not only in fictional novels but in real-life as well. So Daddy Dumbest proceeds to look for ANYthing that will take the target off Olivia's back and on to anyone else's. ANYone. Brian Freeman USED to tell compelling stories, but this foray into excusing the worst in anyone's kid is NOT in that universe. I am returning this crap after this review posts. If I can save ONE person from this crapshow, I will consider that a victory.

Without doubt, this is the worst Zig and Nola book. Hard stop. By the end, I was SCREAMING for Zig to be killed. I detest this character that much.OK, OK, the story... not Mellzer's best, not by a long shot. This is the sort of book you FORCE yourself to finish, because of your respect for the author, and the fact you spent a credit on it. I wish I had returned it. NO ONE in this farce comes off as likeable, with the possible exception of Nola's brother, Roddy. Sometimes in books like this you find a secondary character to root for--not here. It should tell you much that I was rooting for Zig to be killed off... Definitely my last Zig book. Ick!

Rehash of Peter Clines "Many Worlds..." Storylines

Ok, I get that there are numerous ways to tell a story, but, as far as the Many Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics as based on the Schrödinger's Cat theory, Peter Clines is King. Douglas and Child, mere pretenders. I DID like the overlay of the D.B. Cooper story. That was fascinating, but a distraction from the poorly rendered main plot. Perhaps that was by design? The narrator destroyed whatever value this story may have aspired to have. As others have noted, he veers from Bellicose to Barely There. And Constance Green has magically become a male version of Katherine Hepburn! I came very close to returning this book, but I kept at it. This narrator (so poor, I can't recall his name...) should be barred from EVER narrating any book, ever again! Atrocious doesn't BEGIN to describe this guy. If this is the future of the Pendergast Series, kill it now. At the VERY least bring back Scott Brick as narrator.

This series has devolved into tedium. I am returning it, as Koontz repeats the same plot lines as in the past three installments. Over and over. This series started out fresh and intriguing. The continuing storyline with Victor (insert nom du jour here) as a bad man, doing bad things, and Deucalion as the avenging monster along with his sidekick humans fight against the Evil Dr. Blah, blah, blah. Save yourself a BOATLOAD of tedium. Skip this series.

Author is OBSESSED with SEX...

It got so bad, I took to fast forwarding through all the sex (one episode was nearly one whole chapter!) in order to keep up with the story. If I wanted to read about sex I would look for The Happy Hooker or the Joy of Sex, probably less sex in those titles. Beyond that, this guy Stride (stupid name for a hero--so called) is without doubt INCOMPETENT as Freeman writes him. Two people get whacked because Stride is too busy being incompetent, and wondering if Serena loves him or is going to sleep with Claire (Boni Fiso's daughter). SPOILER ALERT: she does. Hey, Freeman, stick to the storyline! Stop all the sex and woolgathering, you MIGHT find a good book in your pages. I am considering giving back the rest of the series. I am glad they were included in my subscription, if I had to shell out a credit for this crap, I'd be very upset. Move on, find a better book. This ain't it.

John Dempsey is an Emotional Wreck

Revisado: 05-27-21

Based on everything I have ever heard or read about the US Navy Seals, "John Dempsey" would never have made the cut in BUDS. He is too emotionally based. He follows his emotions rather than his head--and that is a "cold fact". I am going to reveal a plot twist I saw at the halfway point of this reading: Eleanor is a Double Agent. A REAL Tier One operator would have seen this. I did, and I am nobody's idea of a Tier One, or even Tier 1000, Operator. Dempsey has too much emotional baggage to be effective. Joe Ledger, in the Maberry books about Echo Team, has emotions, but they are kept on a tight rein. Not so with Dempsey, who cries at the drop of a hat, obsesses about his former wife, and falls in love with a double agent. There is NO WAY Dempsey is behind "The Spear" let alone at the tip of it. If we truly have wishy-washy wussified "operators" in our Military and Intelligence communities, we may as well hand the keys to America to anyone who wants them, for we are totally screwed. Spare your money, read anything but this crap.

The ABSOLUTE WORST Mayberry book ever. Possibly due to the narrator, who sucks out loud in Macy’s window. Skip this piece of cow dung.
