A very compelling story. So personal, thoughtful and moving. It was told like a story rather than a book about deconstructing from Christianity. It was interesting and refreshing to have this kind of perspective.
But it wasn’t sin or the numerous tragedies that occurred in his life or to people around him that eventually lead to Dave’s deconversion it was questioning and studying. Something we should all do with our deeply held beliefs. I love the message that Dave gives with this book and his work. Live life on your terms and die with dignity when you’re ready.

This book is a deep dive into American history and some of the political arena but narrows in specifically on this one main issue…the separation of church and state. Interestingly enough since the 1950s that line has become more and more blurred and Christian nationalism is making a lot of noise in protest of basic human rights and personal freedoms. This book hits on so many social and political topics through our history that have contributed to what we are seeing today with Trumpism and White Christian America. The history lesson provided here is necessary and provoking to give the humanist/atheist/progressive/democratic reader the in sight to this growing problem. And it also sheds light into the darker and corrupt aspects of religion specifically Christianity.
Very compelling and necessary book for better understand of the root of many problems we see in this country and the political arena.

An inspiring and refreshing take on being secular“non religious” or even atheist but still having a love and desire for intellect, beauty, art, connectedness, joy, fulfillment and meaning in life.

This book is not overtly powerful or inspiring. But it has given me so much perspective and a renewed stance on not allowing the media, pre-conceived biasses, personal or religious beliefs and even fear keep me from pursuing the truth about something or someone. I never once voted for former President Barack Obama. I grew up very conservative, Christian and Republican. As an adult I began to think for myself, which lead me to re-evaluate every idea I once held onto as truth.
People once stated that the Obamas were Muslims, that Michelle was transgender, that Barack didn’t have a legitimate birth certificate, that he was s socialist and would destroy this country with his crazy health care reform and other political/economic agendas.
I can’t pretend like I truly understand or pay that much attention to what goes on in Washington DC. But I do know that this book has only reinforced what I have been suspicious of for sometime...I completely misjudged the former President, his wife has helped me to see that. They are both hard working, well educated humanist. People are their priority. Helping minorities is their priority. These are all things I strongly align with. I have so much respect for Michelle and the strong female roll model she is, a career woman but also a wife, and mother. Dedicated to her family and also her work. I only wish I could go back in time and give my full support to their campaign. I wish I knew 10 years ago what I know now. But I’m thankful that she was willing and able to share her story and journey now as it is helping me with mine.
