Historia
Hailed by The New York Times as "a marvel of storytelling", The Things They Carried’s portrayal of the boots-on-the-ground experience of soldiers in the Vietnam War is a landmark in war writing. Now, three-time Emmy Award winner-Bryan Cranston, star of the hit TV series Breaking Bad, delivers an electrifying performance that walks the book’s hallucinatory line between reality and fiction and highlights the emotional power of the spoken word.

Gripping & Well-Written
Revisado: 04-01-25
This personal story of a Vietnam War veteran is brought to life in this book. “The Things They Carried” is much more than just the physical gear they often carried. It was the memories and images these veterans returned home with. Bryan Cranston’s narrating made the story that much more gripping. I highly recommend!

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

A Great Listen
Revisado: 02-21-25
The siege of Fort Sumter and the beginning of America’s Civil War is an intriguing story. I learned a lot from Larson’s historical take on the event. I thought Will Patton’s narrating was perfect for the subject! But I liked Larson’s other books better. The Splendid and the Vile and Devil in the White City are tough to surpass! But Larson’s writing style captures the attention like very few. It’s hard to explain why I can’t put his books down.

Historia
At the turn of the twentieth century two new technologies—the car and airplane—took the nation's imagination by storm as they burst, like comets, into American life. The brave souls that leaped into these dangerous contraptions and pushed them to unexplored extremes became new American heroes: the race car driver and the flying ace. No individual did more to create and intensify these raw new roles than the tall, gangly Eddie Rickenbacker, who defied death over and over with such courage and pluck that a generation of Americans came to know his face better than the president's.

An Underrated American Hero
Revisado: 01-02-25
Eddie Rickenbacker was an amazing American and the research and facts presented in the book prove as such. But I just could not settle in to the author’s writing style. I love the late Edward Hermann as a narrator, but the story itself just dragged on for me.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

This book helped me get to know JD Vance more. I was interested in the sociology aspect of his story as he shared the common struggles of growing up in Appalachia. The book is really well-written and JD as narrator is really well-spoken.

Historia
In 1961, the new president John F. Kennedy, inherited an ill-conceived, poorly executed invasion of Cuba that failed miserably and set in motion the events that put the U.S. and the Soviet Union on a collision course that nearly started a war that would have enveloped much of the world. Extensively researched and vividly imagined, The Shadow of War brings to life the many threads that lead to the building crisis between the Soviet Union and the United States in 1962.

I found myself listening to this book every chance I could. Jeff Shaara, once again, brings history to life with his novelistic writing style of historical events. I love the different genre direction that Shaara has taken recently with this book and “The Old Lion. Narrator Paul Michael is brilliant as always and enhances the experience. I highly recommend!!!

Historia
The Nazi regime preached an ideology of physical, mental, and moral purity. But as Norman Ohler reveals in this gripping new history, the Third Reich was saturated with drugs. On the eve of World War II, Germany was a pharmaceutical powerhouse, and companies such as Merck and Bayer cooked up cocaine, opiates, and, most of all, methamphetamines, to be consumed by everyone from factory workers to housewives to millions of German soldiers.

Very Interesting
Revisado: 05-15-24
I enjoyed learning more details about the use of drugs in Nazi Germany. As a WW2 history buff, I was amazed at the amount of information that seemed previously unavailable regarding drug use until now. It took me a bit to get used to the narrator but I’m glad I gave it time. Turns out the book was originally written in German, then translated. So I’m sure the list of narrators had to be unique. I’m glad a listened rather than read, because a lot of difficult words had to be pronounced. If you like WW2 history or even just a little science and pharmacology, you will not be disappointed. I recommend to all WW2 historians.

The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Believe the hype! One of the best stories I’ve “read” in a long time. David James Brown’s writing style and the narration by Edward Hermann are a perfect match! I loved the historical context that’s beautifully woven into the story. I can’t recommend this book enough!

Now band member and guitarist Don Felder finally breaks the Eagles’ years of public silence to take fans behind the scenes. He shares every part of the band’s wild ride, from the pressure-packed recording studios and trashed hotel rooms to the tension-filled courtrooms and from the joy of writing powerful new songs to the magic of performing in huge arenas packed with roaring fans.

Historia
No one other than Warren Zanes, rocker and writer and friend, could author a book about Tom Petty that is as honest and evocative of Petty's music and the remarkable rock and roll history he and his band helped to write. Born in Gainesville, Florida, with more than a little hillbilly in his blood, Tom Petty was a Southern shit kicker, a kid without a whole lot of promise. Rock and roll made it otherwise.

Historia
In Great Lives: David, the first volume in Charles Swindoll's bestselling Great Lives series, Swindoll gives us a closer look at this incredible man who had his fair share of difficulties. Throughout his life, David was gripped by destructive passion, rocked by family chaos and personal tragedy, and motivated by political expediency. Like all of us, David was far from perfect, but Swindoll teaches us that David had the chance to become great when he placed himself at the Lord's disposal.

Inspiring Story of a Man After God’s Own Heart
Revisado: 09-13-23
The story of King David from the Bible is an encouraging example of an imperfect follower of God. Knowing more about the life of David is inspiring because he is no different than any of us. Because of God’s Grace, we don’t have to be perfect or have it all figured out to follow Him! This book is rooted in and brought to life from scripture and Swindoll helps you understand how it applies to our own lives. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more of Charles Swindoll’s Great Lives series. The narration was excellent as well!
