Virgil at his best. Well-drawn characters play out another Virgil Flowers adventure. This one, a complex mystery that keeps the reader guessing . Highly recommended.

Eisler’s writing is informed by his background, and in this book, his understanding of the intelligence community makes for a powerful, story.
His narration is as good as many voiceover professionals. Kudos!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoyed the story and was engaged by the some of the characters, but I would have preferred better narration.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Maya, but then she was the principal protagonist.

What didn’t you like about Lauren Ezzo and Mel Foster ’s performance?

Lauren Ezzo's (I think she was the first-person voice of Maya) voice didn't match the character of Maya as she is described, who should--in my opinion--have voice lower in pitch. When Mel Foster, speaking in third-person, tries to give Maya voice, the sound clashes with the female voice the listener just heard from the other narrator.. Also, Mel Foster (I think he is the voice of Victor and Edison) doesn't differentiate two or three of the voices by characters. I had to, sometimes, back up to learn who was speaking. In the first part of the story, all is being told by the FBI agent, Victor. When the female voice, first person suddenly came through, it was jarring. Although Victor's voice was sometimes flat, the female voice was immediately annoying.

Was The Butterfly Garden worth the listening time?

Marginally. It's a good fantasy/serial killer/mystery. I say mystery, because the author keeps referring to Maya's bandaged hands and the listener/reader wonders about the source of her injuries, knowing that she escaped from the garden.

Any additional comments?

Coleridge's "...willing suspension of disbelief..." is necessary for many works of fiction. "The Butterfly Garden" requires such cooperation by the reader/listener for the core premise of the book and particularly in the final chapter.
