Not worth it!!
Revisado: 10-10-10
I got this book because I had listened to The Little Stranger and really liked it. The description of this book was vague, but thought it would be good. HUGE disappointment. Nothing against gays, but seems like that was focus of this book and didn't seem to be going anywhere. One woman in love with another woman and a third one steps in and the love interest changes. It was a little confusing but this book just didn't seem to have a point. I was really disappointed considering how well I liked her other book. My advice--don't waste your time.

Really makes you think
Revisado: 01-27-10
In a time of the new H1N1 flu virus, this really makes you wonder to what extent people really would go to in an effort to prevent the spread of a disease that is killing half the population. I really enjoyed this book. It was very thought provoking. I was a bit disappointed with the ending as it seemed like there was no closure for any of the characters. They would have had to answer for the actions they had chosen to take, and yet there was no resolution to that, or the mental anguish that you would imagine they had to feel.

Dark and dismal!!
Revisado: 01-27-10
This is one of the most dismal, no hope books I've ever read. From the things we've ever heard or read about Russia/Soviet Union, this just confirms what we think/believe about suppression, loss of hope, etc. The character is a student who can't afford to go to school anymore, barely exists in a small room, has pawned everything just to have a little bit of money, and then murders someone for what he thinks she may have but gets so overwhelmed with his guilt that he spirals downward and feels like everyone knows he's guilty. It was terribly depressing with the descriptions of life in Russia.

Didn't understand it!!
Revisado: 01-27-10
I'm not sure where the author was going with this book. It started off with the narrator's life, then his time interviewing his mother-in-law before her death, then time spent with his father-in-law, then a reminiscence about the in-law's just after their marriage. A brief explanation about the "Black Dogs" that didn't really go anywhere, and the book was over. Maybe I fell asleep at the wheel listening to this on the way to work, but when it was over, I wasn't sure what the point was. Not that it was a bad listen, but didn't go anywhere. Or at least I missed it.

Historia
Like Charles Dickens' other early novels, The Old Curiosity Shop was a huge success, even eclipsing The Pickwick Papers. The melodramatic saga of the flight of Little Nell and her grandfather captured the public's attention, so much so that people would wait in long lines for the release of the next installment of the saga. For the character of Little Nell, the beautiful child thrown into a shadowy, terrifying world, Dickens drew on a tragedy in his own life.

Long
Revisado: 12-20-09
I am finding that Dickens is NOT one of my favorite authors. I read the reviews and how this was so well received when it first came out in the paper and people couldn't wait for the next episode. It was too long and I don't have a clue where the title came from. It was not what I usually enjoy. It seemed to drag and I couldn't wait to get to the end.

Long but good
Revisado: 12-20-09
This book started out a little slow and I was frustrated with the obvious bad luck that was coming the main characters way. It eventually picked up and got better, but I sometimes found the fact that the Count was always in the right place at the right time sometimes way beyond belief and it kind of detracted from the story. No one has that kind of luck. But overall, I really enjoyed the book.

Excellent story about a little girl's life as part of the Holocaust. Very discriptive and made you think about the horrors they endured. Great intermixing of the present with the past. Really enjoyed this book although very heartbreaking.

Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death.

Hysterical!!
Revisado: 05-30-09
I thought this book was an absolute hoot!! I could have done without the intermittent musical interludes and some of the unnecessary swearing, but the story was really good and laugh out loud funny in places. The narrator was perfect for the main character. Loved it.

Great listen but abrupt ending!
Revisado: 04-16-09
I really enjoyed this book all the way til I got to the end. It was somewhat suspenseful without expecting murder or anything bad. But, I was disappointed in the end. I felt like it just ended without being sure what the outcome was for some of the characters. That was the only disappointment.
