Too many books are written from a position of self indulgence. You find that the whole thing could have easily been reduced to a pamphlet and gotten the job done with 25% less effort.

This book spares the reader of bloat and yet it’s inviting and useful.

The one criticism I have is that it seems to be written solely from the perspective of a man seeking connection with a woman. If I were a woman I think I’d be pretty put out by this perspective. Women have the same challenges at their core as men.

Be that as it may I found this book to be both informative and fun and I didn’t have to wade through oceans of personal antecdotes to get to the point.

High marks.

This book makes me appreciate the moments of sitting on my deck drinking coffee in the morning. If nuclear war occurs there will be no coffee, no water, no electricity, no friends, no food, no plants, no birds singing… As Annie quotes in her book (were I to be alive) I would envy the dead.
That people as planning for mass extermination makes me sick to my stomach.

Not a fun read but, I believe, necessary.
Excellent book. Very human. Very approachable.
Utterly terrifying.

Beautifully rendered series of vignettes pointing out the price we all pay (men and women) for the individual power over/power under model of hierarchy. He walks us thru European history, feminism, racism, genocide and their relationship to this model of hierarchy. All this woven into individual and common relationship concerns between partner and partner.

Truly a life changing piece of work. An extension of his prior work I Don’t Want to Talk About It.

Some interesting points but oppressively repetitive. The five hinderances and the 7 stages over and over and over. Self indulgent.
Would be just as effective if reduced to a pamphlet. Getting my money back. Read Dispenzaa’s books. Far more practical.

Beautiful, captivating, multi generational story. Even simple moments captured with nuance and sensitivity; transported me like I was there. The smells, the hardship, the longing and fragility, the heroic moments…. The story feels daunting in its length but consistently relatable and that’s what keeps the reader glued. Definitely an investment in time but I just couldn’t put it down. He pulls all the threads of the story back together in surprising beautiful ways at the end. One of my all-time favorite books.

Good points. Felt to me like the story of a nice white girl who grew up in a home of relative privilege with love and support. Good her her. I never got the impression she had an awareness of how lucky she is.

The interwoven, personal anecdotes about her story, started to wear on me after a while.

They could’ve reduced this down to a pamphlet and all the relevant points would have been made.

This book is pure gold. It completely changed my perspective on how I carry myself in the world and how I got to this point and want to do about it. It’s filled with practical how to tips. It’s filled with generous cross references to other peoples work. And it makes sense. Everything in this book makes sense. I don’t know why it doesn’t have more notoriety but this book is a game changer. Many thanks to the author.

Yes, the book is a slog. This book requires your full attention. If you actually want to learn something, if you want a world view that is wider than the one you currently have, if you want to have an occasional chuckle, then open this book and let the full volume of it wash over you. If you bore easily or if you want to be told what you think you already know, then don’t even bother. It’s up to you.
I loved this book. It gave me an understanding of the interconnectedness of everything we experience on a daily basis, in a way that I never before got. It also gave me a sense of empathy for what the wider world is experiencing and finally, while we are definitely experiencing upheaval, we as Americans continue to be privileged. We are going to be just fine. Thank you very much.
Highly recommended.

Still Worth Wading Thru the Histrionics

Same narrators as the previous book: courage to be disliked. This one builds on the concepts laid out in the prior book. Tries to be more practical with a how to approach. I like the student philosopher approach. But I think they really made a mistake with the student acting with a whining, accusatory (often histrionic) tone of voice…. And then backing down in agreement at every turn. After the fifth or sixth time it becomes tedious. After the 20th or 30th time it becomes downright nauseating. Hard to listen to after a while. Still - the concepts are profound.

I read the print (and apparently the abridged version) of this book when I was about 20. I’m 60 now… So so so many things came back many of them imperfectly but this time in full technicolor. The narrator was incredible. I have read that some people have criticized his performance. A book of this magnitude? Really? I thought he did an impeccable job. I’m not going to “rate” this book. Either you’ve got the stamina to ride the wave or you don’t. Incredible. At times profound; almost Zen-like. Nuances I hadn’t picked up in the first reading.
If you’re a Stephen King fan then this book is required reading and this unabridged version with this particular narrator is a fantastic way to take the journey.
