Historia
Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier, the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city, is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

So well written … the other side of a story that Americans think they know so well. Can’t help but empathize with the characters.

Historia
Author David Brooks explores the four commitments that define a life of meaning and purpose: to a spouse and family, to a vocation, to a philosophy or faith, and to a community. Our personal fulfillment depends on how well we choose and execute these commitments. Brooks looks at a range of people who have lived joyous, committed lives, and who have embraced the necessity and beauty of dependence. He gathers their wisdom on how to choose a partner, how to pick a vocation, how to live out a philosophy, and how we can begin to integrate our commitments into one overriding purpose.

This book was highly recommended to me as somebody who is mid to late career and looking to figure out “what is next” given the past couple of years of a pandemic. It started off so well … laying a great foundation based on research but then veered off into parenting and religious advice. A bit too much of that and I couldn’t wait until it was finished.

Unexpectedly loved it!
Revisado: 04-18-21
I’m not sure how I never heard of this book… But this book is outstanding - The story itself is fascinating about a young chess prodigy who becomes a master martial artist. Layering on top of that the principles that almost anyone can apply was an incredible added bonus. And I liked the Ferris interview at the end.
Highly recommend!

Historia
Modern knowledge workers communicate constantly. Their days are defined by a relentless barrage of incoming messages and back-and-forth digital conversations - a state of constant, anxious chatter in which nobody can disconnect, and so nobody has the cognitive bandwidth to perform substantive work. There was a time when tools like email felt cutting edge, but a thorough review of current evidence reveals that the "hyperactive hive mind" workflow they helped create has become a productivity disaster, reducing profitability and perhaps even slowing overall economic growth.

Pretty good
Revisado: 06-28-20
Well researched and well done. For those who have listened to or read on this topic there’s nothing much that’s brand new - but a good synopsis of how to engage with others in the face of differences in style, stress, technology, and other factors. Recommend!

Historia
How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Masterful storytelling ... hopefully a new audiobook standard
Revisado: 03-21-20
Gladwell is a master storyteller. Almost everyone who has read his books knows that. The content of the book makes you think deeply about how we as humans interact, assume, and collide. Thought provoking!
This format - dialogue, background music, original audio, took his storytelling to a new level.
Bravo!

Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.
