Coping with the pain of separation
Revisado: 01-27-23
Alice Oseman wrote a wonderful story of two people coping with the unknown of a long distance relationship yet holding onto their own heart-stopping first love. Joe Jameson did a marvelous job of voicing Charlie and added so much depth and inflection to Charlie’s uncertainty and love for Nick. It was a nice counterpoint to have two actors narrate the chapters and both voice actors gave warm performances. Thoughtful and moving story.

Historia
In Queer City, the acclaimed Peter Ackroyd looks at London in a whole new way - through the complete history and experiences of its gay and lesbian population. In Roman Londinium, the city was dotted with lupanaria (“wolf dens” or public pleasure houses), fornices (brothels), and thermiae (hot baths). Then came the Emperor Constantine, with his bishops, monks, and missionaries. And so began an endless loop of alternating permissiveness and censure.

Interesting and insightful
Revisado: 11-29-22
Peter Ackroyd writes an interesting book chock full of details about queer people that populated London. He writes about what is what like for queer men and women to live and survive in metropolitan London. Will Watt brings a studious book to life with his excellent performance and the variety of voices throughout the book. Will makes the book fascinating, funny and sad in various measures.

Historia
George’s strict upbringing has left him ashamed of his sexuality. In his forties now, he's yet to come out or even kiss a man - until he meets Quentin. Quentin has had enough of bad relationships with men who won't commit. Still raw from the last one, he’s not ready to try again. But George is sweet, and helping the older man get some experience might be a fun diversion.

Finding my own Happy Place
Revisado: 09-10-21
Jay Northcote has written a wonderful, touching fifth book in the Rainbow Place series. Jay captures the excitement and unique tension of two men-one younger out gay man and the other older, closeted man-as they grapple with a sexual attraction that becomes something much more serious. Hamish Long does a fantastic job of giving each of the characters-Quentin, George, Liv, Seb-such clear and distinctive voices. Hamish takes Jay’s wonderful word smithing and provides the perfect dramatic pacing. This story is so well-told as the reader follows the up and down of these two unlikely sex partners’ early relationship, the pains and fears of early budding affection, the frustrations of an out gay man in love with a closeted man. The beauty of Jay’s writing and Hamish’s brilliant narration is that the story and the people in it flow naturally. Nothing sounds forced or contrived. The worst part of this audiobook is that, when you get to the end, you have to say goodbye to characters who become so real to you. That is excellent writing on Jay Northcote’s part and brilliant dramatization on Hamish Long’s part. Excellent job!

This book has it all!
Revisado: 08-29-21
This book picks up after The Midwinter Prince with Laurie and Sasha starting a tenuous new life together. Starting off with so much uncertainty, I loved the way Harper Fox wrote all of the characters and how real and believable their actions were. I loved the way Laurie and Sasha handled so many different surprises and challenges as two sweet, loving men. Rusty Coles did a FANTASTIC job narrating the variety of scenes and characters. Fortunately, Harper Fox provided amazing and dazzling plots and places from London to Hollywood. Halfway through the book, I was so caught up in the action when Sasha leaves L.A. to return to England that I could not stop listening. It was more exciting and captivating than a Tom Clancy thriller. Rusty Coles did such a wonderful job capturing the excitement, the pathos, the sensuality between Laurie and Sasha, rivalries between Laurie and the Hollywood actors, and so much more. I binge-listened to Rusty Coles for the rest of the audiobook. He is simply an amazing voice-talent. With all of the different plot lines, I wondered how Harper Fox would resolve them all. They were all pulled together perfectly and in the most natural ways. Harper Fox’s ability to create mind pictures, realistic characters, daunting and breath-taking plots and some of the hottest love scenes is unparalleled. Rusty Coles’ ability to take her words, portray them with force, with intimacy, with longing, with such depth of emotion that it could ruin you for other narrators. To say I loved the book AND this audiobook is an understatement. It was FANTASTIC!

Historia
Rowan is stuck at a folk festival helping out a mate, and it really isn’t his scene. The yoga and singing workshops are bad enough, but morris dancing is the final straw. Bearded men with beer guts prancing around wearing bells - who wants to watch that? All Rowan’s preconceptions are shattered when he meets Seth - a morris dancer, and the stuff Rowan’s fantasies are made of.

Great story. Great chemistry.
Revisado: 08-16-21
Rowan meets Seth, a sexy Morris dancer at a festival and becomes immediately attracted. I had no idea about Morris dancers or these types of festivals. It was a fun setting for a meet-up. Jay Northcote has developed a fascinating story about something I’d never heard about it. Hamish Long delivered a fantastic performance telling the quick but very erotic story of Rowan and Seth’s romance. Hamish gives Rowan and Seth such great voices. Hamish gave Seth a deep sexy voice. Rowan has got a youthful and eager tone. Hamish’s performance quickens when Seth and Rowan together then becomes more relaxed during quieter times. Hamish knows how to pace the story so well. Hamish knows how to give Northcote’s words so much color and depth. Great story. Great characters all delivered perfectly by Hamish Long!

A “Bad Romance” fun and genuine
Revisado: 08-16-21
Wicksy, a studly straight rugby player, sees the performance of a charismatic and gorgeous drag queen, Lady Gogo, then becomes enraptured with her. Jay Norhcote has written a great story of the wild attractions that happen between people and the complications that come from it. This is a fascinating story but it is so much better to read the story while Hamish Long is delivering it. Hamish does not just read the story, he gives you a theatrical performance. His voice characterizations are amazing. Wicksy has a deep, rough voice. Lady Gogo has a a sultry female voice with an American accent. I am amazed at how spot on Hamish has nailed Lady Gogo’s American female accent! It is great fun to read along and hear how Hamish has developed such distinct voices for each of the characters. In addition to wonderful characters, Hamish has been able to take Jay Northcote’s wonderful writing and deliver it as if it were a radio drama, not just a book reading. He captures the intimate times when Wicksy and Lady Gogo are together so lustfully and passionately. Then the performance becomes softer afterwards. Truly, it’s like getting your own private theatrical performance. Nortcote’s words acted out by Long are a fantastic match!
