Historia
Liz Dawson weaves through a crowd with the ease of a tropical breeze; she’s clever, smooth, and confident—qualities that make her a brilliant serial con artist. Isabelle Beresford is strikingly beautiful, obscenely wealthy, and the new owner of Casa Esmerelda, a fabulous villa on the Mexican coast—attributes that make her the perfect mark. When she offers Liz a job handling the installation of a piece of art in her otherwise vacant home, Liz can’t resist the allure of a beach retreat. But when Liz is mistaken for Isabelle herself, Liz can’t help slipping into the socialite’s identity.

Rich characters and an organic, twisty narrative makes for an intriguing and rewarding listen!
Revisado: 04-24-25
First off, author Krysten Ritter does a FANTASTIC job with narrating her own novel bringing emotion impactfully to the forefront making you feel exhilaration, apprehension, fear, ecstasy, and character so clearly! Every character was given their own life, identity, and personality in her reading.
The novel itself is steamy, intriguing, and filled with organic and striking twists and turns. A mystery has to be reverse engineered and you can see that in how the web of duplicity unfolds. After this and Bonfire, I supremely applaud Krysten for her character work and how well fleshed out everyone is. The depth of back story and motivating factors weave beautifully and rewardingly into the story. It’s a really clever and well thought out thriller with great dashes of erotic flavor and tropical sauciness. The thematic material of a con woman trying to escape her life and identity only to fall into something far more treacherous with the danger boxing her in as time goes on is regularly present and pays off in ways you cannot expect! Cheers to Retreat! Bravo!

Solid Marvel Novel

Solid Jessica Jones story with good narration and characterization.
Revisado: 03-17-25
This Jessica Jones audiobook ultimately proved to be very good. It was a bit gradual in locking in my interest, but it proved to be a poignant and engaging story. A little self-reflection on Jessica goes a long way, and the characterization of her was excellent! Pure to the Jessica I came to love from Krysten Ritter’s work on the Netflix series. Intrigue, mystery, action, and the touch of noir made it a satisfying story.
The narration work was fine. Although, not as distinctive or as rich as the work on Breaking The Dark, another Jessica Jones audiobook I finished right before this one. Sometimes, the character voices weren’t distinct or different enough to easily grasp who was talking at certain points, but it worked in the long run.
I was a little indecisive about this one for the first few chapters, but as the story progressed and it got deeper into Jessica as a person with her own struggles and inner conflicts, it filled out my interest to keep going with it. Breaking the Dark by Lisa Jewell is definitely superior, but I would recommend this story as well. It was descriptively written with a substantive story. I ultimately liked it and enjoyed my time with it! More Jessica Jones audiobooks, please!

Rich, dimensional writing backed by an excellent narrator re-captures what I love about Jessica Jones!
Revisado: 03-02-25
I have a deep love for the character of Jessica Jones from the Netflix series starring Krysten Ritter, and this audiobook hit that vibe DIRECTLY on target for me! The writing from Lisa Jewell weaves a compelling film noir mystery and introspective story for Jessica, and moves by at a brisk clip without sacrificing a lick of depth or development. Also, Helen Laser’s narration and voice work is SUPERB! She captures Krysten Ritter’s vibe as the character here coupled with the fantastic writing to constantly visualize Ritter in the role again. I loved the range of distinct characters she crafted with her vocal talents. The whole story was emotionally captivating and kept me engrossed in it all. I kept listening for chapters at a time, and finished it up in two weeks because I just wanted to experience this story and see it through to its satisfying end!

Richness of character and emotion shines through!
Revisado: 09-09-24
Presented with a masterful performance by Karissa Vacker, this novel really showed a great talent by Krysten Ritter featuring very rich and detailed characters who grow with the story. Making this a first person narrative was a perfect choice, allowing us to see and feel the mystery through main character Abby Williams’ perspective and memories. I really came to care for her plight, especially with Vacker’s fully committed work on this audiobook!

Great performances and sound design bolster a strong, investing thriller!
Revisado: 04-14-24
I was attracted to this by the stars involved as I love Krysten Ritter, and everyone did an exceptional, INCREDIBLE job with the voice acting. The sound design filled out the story beautifully! The story was consistently paced and always had a clear piece of drama, tension, peril, or emotion developing. I was thoroughly engaged and this went by breezily. The ending leaves you pondering the characters and what their fates could be, which might not be everyone’s taste, but this was a well executed story through the quality that was put into the production. I finished it over a few days and really had a good time with it. Highly recommended!

Historia
A young boy is found horribly murdered in a mock crucifixion. Is the murderer the elderly woman who witnessed the crime? A neurologist who can no longer bear the pain life inflicts on its victims? A psychiatrist with a macabre sense of humor and a guilty secret? A mysterious mental patient, locked in silent isolation? Lieutenant Kinderman follows a bewildering trail that links all these people, confronting a new enigma at every turn even as more murders surface. Why does each victim suffer the same dreadful mutilations? Why are two of the victims priests?

Far deeper exploration alongside the fascinating film.
Revisado: 01-27-24
After being familiar with the film adaptation from Bill Blatty, eventually released as The Exorcist III (with a director’s cut later re-assembled by Scream Factory on Blu-ray), it was very interesting to see what Blatty altered, excised, and kept thoroughly intact from the original novel. It’s very engaging exploring the ideas and characters further here, especially with more of the Gemini Killer’s motivations and back story present. What didn’t make it to screen gives more insight into the film Blatty was intending to make before studio input re-crafted the film.
The only detriment is the narrator here who does a very dry job for the majority of the text. He doesn’t create distinct character voices, aside from his far more involved performance as the Gemini Killer, and just doesn’t do much to give a sense of drama, personality, or suspense to Blatty’s rich writing. It does detract from what could’ve been a far more enthralling presentation. The novel is worthwhile, but it deserved stronger representation as an audiobook.

Very enjoyable TNG Adventure!
Revisado: 06-30-23
I had this on audio cassette before, but I upgraded to this digital version and I wholly enjoyed this. John de Lancie puts in a near excellent performance. Some voices don’t fully evoke their characters, but his Picard, Worf, & Trelane are superb! The story is a fascinating exploration of Q alongside this inspired multiverse spanning story. Peter David is a legendary writer across Trek & Marvel Comics, and he delivers a pitch perfect tale here! Wholly worthy of the TNG legacy! I very much enthralled music and sound effects here, despite not being direct from the series, but they worked nonetheless. This makes me want to buy the book for the full unabridged version!
