Great history lesson as well

These are gripping stories well told. A true gift to anyone who loves the mountains and their history.

Nick Howe is a master storyteller and his love and respect for the people of the north country is equal to his love of the mountains themselves. I love how he shares that so fully with the reader/listener. I generally appreciated Douglas James’ performance, but winced at his mispronunciation of Mt. Chocorua and the bizarre (Southern?) accent he uses for Peter Crane.

And for a little while, things are looking up: Ian makes friends, and his fondness for the outdoors and for fixing things lands him work helping neighbors.

Rural done right, for once

Rural characters in books mostly make me wince. They spend a lot of time thinking about their ruralness, turn too many -ings into -in’s, and use the wrong tool for a job. But Ian could be the kid up the road from my farm. Malcom Silver-Van Meter nails the voice in his reading.

I can’t imagine this terrific story told any better. A wonderful listen all around, even if you’re not especially interested in soccer.
