Some of the best most practical relationship advice. I already have a hard copy but I like that I can listen while driving/doing chores. The narrator came off as a little harsh at times but not that big of a deal. I’ll still listen numerous times.

Thank you, Shani for putting this out into the world. With so many things having changed in just a short amount of time (in culture in general and how that affects the dating scene) it can be easy for women to get sucked into yet another manifestation of the tired narrative that something is wrong that we need to fix about ourselves. Thank you for your fierce love evident in these words and for the encouragement to enjoy life now.

I was always making excuses for people under the assumption that bad behavior came from the fact that maybe they were hurting. And then I keep getting manipulated. My therapist has been telling me much of the theme of this book. I really like how tactics are spelled out so I don’t get the wool pulled over my eyes over and over by getting distracted by them. I also feel heavy hearted. It’s sad to me that people live this way. I grieve the time I’ve wasted trying to make intimate relationships with toxic people work. I’m grateful for the tools given in this book but am also processing a sadness that I have to live much more offensively. Also trying to process my anger and use the tactics without being covertly aggressive (not becoming the monster I feel like I’m “fighting.”)

This affirmed my path to health and lent language to describe experiences I’ve had growing up. I greatly appreciate the practical tools given. Much of what was said in this book echoes things my therapist has been saying. I’ll take all the repetition I can get as I unlearn toxic patterns and continue to build a healthier life.

Incredibly helpful, practical pointers on what to actually look out for and encouragement to not allow worry and anxiety to rule your life (which dull your intuition to true threats). A must read for sure.

This book names a lot of my experience that I’ve accepted as normal. Really helpful on my path to freedom. I read other reviews about the narrator and it must have been changed since then. The reader isn’t robotic, I didn’t find the performance distracting in any way.

I have never heard someone so accurately and thoroughly describe so many aspects of my experience in relationships (with self, family, romantic partners, friends and bosses). Before reading this, I have wondered outloud on many occasions why I attract dysfunctional relationships. I thought I would be stuck in a generational cycle, almost like a spell. I have been growing a lot but still find some patterns persisting. This book has been incredibly illuminating. I’m excited to do the recovery steps he outlines with the help of a professional therapist.

I found out about this book through listening to Ian Morgan Cron’s podcast, Typologies. I’m super skeptical when it comes to personality assessments/tests but have found the enneagram really helpful in growing in healthy self awareness, self-compassion and personal development as well as growing in understanding and compassion for others as I learn about the different personality types. This book provides an informative overview and possibilities of each type rather than “boxing people in.” The stories and examples kept me interested and helped me understand the concepts. I enjoyed listening and learned a lot!
