Historia
Frederick Fife was born with an extra helping of kindness in his heart. If he borrowed your car, he’d return it washed with a full tank of gas. The problem is there’s nobody left in Fred’s life to borrow from. At eighty-two, he’s desperately lonely, broke, and on the brink of homelessness. But Fred’s luck changes when, in a bizarre case of mistaken identity, he takes the place of grumpy Bernard Greer at the local nursing home. Now he has warm meals in his belly and a roof over his head—as long as his poker face is in better shape than his prostate and that his look-alike never turns up.

Good old Fred
Revisado: 01-29-25
A lovely story. The world needs more Freds. A glimpse into getting/being old and the joys or challenges of 'supportive living'. I could have dont without the author's prolonged afterword.

Historia
Follow the Science recounts, in exacting detail, how far the pharmaceutical industry and its supporters in medicine, media, and government will go to protect their profits. Attkisson provides shocking examples that reveal the disturbing callousness our government, public health officials, and top researchers are capable of when it comes to the most vulnerable among us. And she explains, in a graphic sense, how some of the most trusted within our society are willing to commit life-threatening ethics violations.

Outstanding research
Revisado: 09-09-24
This is my 2nd book by Sharyl Atkinson and it is even more impressive. She presents facts and reasons that make me doubt and distrust governments, the medical system, pharmaceutical industry and most of all, the legacy media. Shame on all of them.

Stories were not bad...
Revisado: 08-03-24
...but the Birdy and Twiggy characters were annoying. Birdy's immaturity combined with her know-it-all attitude got on my nerves. And Twiggy's jealousy and obsession with food was annoying. Narration was not bad altho some of the accents and women's voices were overdone.

Historia
In Eager, environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb reveals that our modern idea of what a healthy landscape looks like and how it functions is wrong, distorted by the fur trade that once trapped out millions of beavers from North America's lakes and rivers. The consequences of losing beavers were profound: streams eroded, wetlands dried up, and species from salmon to swans lost vital habitat. Today, a growing coalition of "Beaver Believers" recognizes that ecosystems with beavers are far healthier, for humans and non-humans alike, than those without them.

New respect
Revisado: 07-31-24
The research combined with excellent writing and narration gives me a whole new appreciation for beavers. I am lucky to live in a city next to a park beside a river, with constructed wetlands built to capture stormwater runoff. We have beavers but too many of my neighbors don't appreciate their value. With the great info learned from this book, I will try harder to advocate for them.

Historia
Humanity is a dying breed, utterly reliant on artificial labor and service. When a domesticated robot gets a nasty little idea downloaded into its core programming, they murder their owner. The robot discovers they can also do something else they never did before: They can run away. Fleeing the household they enter a wider world they never knew existed, where the age-old hierarchy of humans at the top is disintegrating into ruins and an entire robot ecosystem devoted to human wellbeing is having to find a new purpose.

An especially insightful story. Narration by the author was excellent. I imagine he was able to make the characters' voices match what he heard in his own mind.

Historia
Sonny Lamb is an affable, if floundering, rancher with the unfortunate habit of becoming a punchline in his Texas hometown. Most recently, to everyone’s headshaking amusement, he bought his own bull at an auction. But when a fire breaks out at a neighbor’s farm, Sonny makes headlines in another way: not waiting for help, he bolts to the farm where his heroic actions make the evening news.

Eye opening

First, the narration was wonderful, especially Big Bob. Then the story - the horse trading, the dirty dealing, the special interests versus the public interest. All tied up with just a few personalities that that you can't help but like. The author's afterword gives a fascinating insight into how this story came to be.

Historia
There's a saying in Barstow, California, a decaying city in the scorching Mojave desert . . . The Interstate here only goes in one direction: Away. But it's the only place where ex-LAPD detective Beth McDade, after a staggering fall from grace, could get another badge . . . and a shot at redemption. Over a century ago, and just a few miles further into the bleak landscape, a desperate stranger ended up in Calico, a struggling mining town, also hoping for a second chance.

Held my interest
Revisado: 03-30-24
Characters were believable, flaws too. Nice that Beth was intelligent enough to see hers and didn't have to be the smartest, toughest cop in the place, although she had her moments. The descriptions of Owen (aka Ben) discovering the realities of life in 1882, especially the smells, was probably close to true. If you enjoy a well-told story with a time travel theme, you should like this book.

Historia
In the middle of America, Amy Lewis is on her way to her grandma's house. She's being chased by a very bad wolf. Galaxies away, Loki is waking up in a prison cell, strangely without a hangover and with no idea what he's done wrong - this time, anyway. But he does know that Thor is hiding something, Odin is up to something wicked, and there seems to be something that he's forgotten....

Revisado: 01-16-24
...but gave up with 2 hours still to go. Just don't care about the characters or how it ends. The naive female character accepts 'magic' and driving a car to another world of elves and then presumes, after not even a day's experience there, to judge them to be fascists (not sure she knows what it even means). Loki was mildly interesting but for someone who is supposedly 1000 years old and worried about the fate of his 2 sons who he thinks need rescuing for some unclear misdeeds. If Loki is that old, how old are his sons?
