Essential story in history of spaceflight.

Very little known history of two aviation pioneers. I appreciated the author's depiction which was not glorified. In the end, both aviators broke barriers but were not unblemished.

Historia
It's 1942 and the Nazis are racing to be the first to build a weapon unlike any known before. They have the physicists, they have the uranium, and now all their plans depend on amassing a single ingredient: heavy water, which is produced in Norway's Vemork, the lone plant in all the world that makes this rare substance. Under threat of death, Vemork's engineers push production into overdrive. For the Allies, the plant must be destroyed.

Captivating
Revisado: 12-27-20
Reading some of the other reviews, I was concerned that I wouldn't like the book. I'm glad I listened to it. The story of sacrifice some Norwegians made for the sake of the entire world is phenomenal. The book reads like a spy novel. Chapters often end with cliffhangers. If it wasn't true, it works be unbelievable. Fantastic story. The prose is also excellent with each character very well fleshed out.
There are many negative comments regarding the narrator. Maybe not the best but does a competent job. Not distracting. If you like history, espionage or adventure, definitely get this book.

Interesting story
Revisado: 11-13-20
A very interesting story on a common but mundane topic. Waldman keeps your attention. The book is more about the people whose lives are encompassed by rust rather than the compound itself. Personally, I would prefer more on the science and less about the idiosyncrasies of the protagonists. An example is a detailed description of one character's interest in fish tanks and badminton. Not my preference but many might like that personal narrative.
Narration is wonderful with perfect deadpan one liners as to be expected from a comedian.

Historia
Uranium is a common element in the earth's crust and the only naturally occurring mineral with the power to end all life on the planet. After World War II, it reshaped the global order---whoever could master uranium could master the world. Marie Curie gave us hope that uranium would be a miracle panacea, but the Manhattan Project gave us reason to believe that civilization would end with apocalypse.

disappointing
Revisado: 09-12-20
the book follows a narrative that uranium is bad and is the cause of great misfortune for humanity. I was hoping for a more nuanced story. I came here after reading Richard Rhodes' the making of the atom bomb, which is a far better book.
I was also very annoyed by the narrator's use of fake accents. It was unnecessary and distracting.

Historia
Initially, the Thirty Years War was precipitated in 1618 by religious conflicts between Protestants and Catholics in the Holy Roman Empire. But the conflict soon spread beyond religion to encompass the internal politics and balance of power within the Empire, and then later to the other European powers. By the end, it became simply a dynastic struggle between Bourbon France and Habsburg Spain. And almost all of it was fought out in Germany. Entire regions were depopulated and destroyed.

Phenomenal history.
Revisado: 04-02-20
The seminar history of the Thirty Years War. I don't know which is better, the prose or the narrator.
This is not easy listening. There are a large number of characters and each is described richly. I loved the eloquent language used. Very elegant writing.
The narrator adds wonderful color and inflection to the words. I think he might be the best narrator I've heard on audio book.
If you are a serious history buff, you must listen to this book. Understanding the Thirty Years War is key to understanding Germany and Europe in the past three centuries.

Historia
In the predawn hours of March 4, 2002, just below the 10,000-foot peak of a mountain in eastern Afghanistan, a fierce battle raged. Outnumbered by Al Qaeda fighters, Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman and a handful of SEALs struggled to take the summit in a desperate bid to find a lost teammate. Chapman, leading the charge, was gravely wounded in the initial assault. Believing he was dead, his SEAL leader ordered a retreat. Chapman regained consciousness, alone with the enemy closing in on three sides, beginning the most difficult and exceptional fight of his life.

The story of America's greatest explorers
Revisado: 07-26-18
if you like history, you'll love this book. Ambrose gives enough detail to bring the story to life without suffocating it. Quotes from the journals make it very personal and Ambrose adds thoughtful balanced commentary. Well narrated. Highly recommended
