Historia
The visionary chemist Sidney Gottlieb was the CIA’s master magician and gentlehearted torturer - the agency’s “poisoner in chief.” As head of the MK-ULTRA mind control project, he directed brutal experiments at secret prisons on three continents. He made pills, powders, and potions that could kill or maim without a trace - including some intended for Fidel Castro and other foreign leaders. He paid prostitutes to lure clients to CIA-run bordellos, where they were secretly dosed with mind-altering drugs. His experiments spread LSD across the United States.

Great read- I don’t understand gripes about the narration
Revisado: 02-04-22
I read this as a follow up to another Kinser book “The Brothers” and was not disappointed. The combined narrative of Gottlieb and the Dulles brothers is nothing short of astounding. I found no issue with the narration- performance is consistent, there are no annoying frequency buildups and it sounds properly de-essed.

Entirely unique
Revisado: 12-19-20
Read this book. An industry screen-writer could not have written a more thrilling story than the truth of what happened in Athens TN. 10/10 would recommend.

Historia
In this detailed and fascinating account of the legend of the "Wizard of the Saddle," we see a man whose strengths and flaws were both of towering proportions, a man possessed of physical valor perhaps unprecedented among his countrymen. And, ironically, Forrest - the first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan - was a man whose social attitudes may well have changed farther in the direction of racial enlightenment over the span of his lifetime than those of most American historical figures.

A balanced biography
Revisado: 09-23-20
I read this immediately after finishing a more laudatory biography of NBF, and it’s provided the more balanced view I was looking for. The does not attempt to deify or vilify the subject, and pays a much needed dose of attention to the post war years. 9/10 would highly recommend, my only criticism is that the author doesn’t do as good of a job explaining battles as the aforementioned pro-Forrest biography.

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Real American Heroes

Historia
As presidential candidates sling dirt at each other, America desperately needs a few real heroes. Tragically, liberal historians and educators have virtually erased traditional American heroes from history. According to the Left, the Founding Fathers were not noble architects of America but selfish demagogues, and self-made entrepreneurs like Rockefeller were robber barons and corporate polluters.

Overall great
Revisado: 09-18-20
Overall, this book is great but I have one main caveat: I have read some of McClanahan’s other works and listened to his podcast, and I was not expecting such a strong dose of evangelical bias. It’s fine once you realize it’s there and the work compares favorably to other material with this kind of bias but boy was I surprised. Evangelicalism aside, the message of this book if revenant and important for younger generations and I highly recommend it.

Historia
In a scrap heap within an abandoned factory, the greatest invention in history lies dormant and unused. By what fatal error of judgment has its value gone unrecognized, its brilliant inventor punished rather than rewarded for his efforts? In defense of those greatest of human qualities that have made civilization possible, one man sets out to show what would happen to the world if all the heroes of innovation and industry went on strike.

Great book, crazy to read in the middle of a “temporary emergency”
Revisado: 06-18-20
I’ve heard of people who do drugs saying that after a trip, it takes a while to integrate and understand their revelations. That is how I feel after reading atlas shrugged. This masterpiece addresses several issues individually, thoroughly, and also manages to weave them into a unified philosophical tapestry. All while simultaneously being a thrilling adventure with a great love story thrown in. 10/10 would recommend- it will challenge you.

Historia
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.
