Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Very good pace of storey

I liked the development of the characters and the valid points made by the antagonist. Not a good vs bad plot. Modern age with James Bond / batman type tech fiction. Thanks to JP for another good read.

Historia
A thirty-four-year-old American woman—a secret agent—is sent to do dirty work in France. “Sadie Smith” is how the narrator introduces herself to her lover, to the rural commune of French subversives on whom she is keeping tabs, and to the reader. Sadie has met her love, Lucien, a young and well-born Parisian, by “cold bump”—making him believe the encounter was accidental. Like everyone Sadie targets, Lucien is useful to her and used by her. Sadie operates by strategy and dissimulation, based on what her “contacts”—shadowy figures in business and government—instruct.

Storyteller was slow and monotonous with this one. I chose it based on "Booker Awards" almost list. Too slow and verbose for me.

Historia
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

Historia
To the wider world, Al Pacino exploded onto the scene like a supernova. He landed his first leading role, in The Panic in Needle Park, in 1971, and by 1975, he had starred in four movies—The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon—that were not just successes but landmarks in the history of film. Those performances became legendary and changed his life forever. Not since Marlon Brando and James Dean in the late 1950s had an actor landed in the culture with such force.

I loved this so much!!! But….

Perspective by a well respected actor.
Revisado: 11-04-24
I appreciate the history of the film business as well.as the insights into Pacinos decisions. The reading by the author was the only right choice.
The absence of more indepth about person relations with women he loved illustrated his mindset about permanence and trust. For example first children conceived through IVF was omitted. This was not shared but would have added depth and humor.
Pacino's humor and grasp of irony is core to his life's storey.
He paced the storey telling with expertise. No lull or a boring moment in this self reported sharing. He demonstrated confidence in the reader to see him. I admire more now than ever.
