Historia
Persephone Honeyfield is witty, intelligent, and very aware that the only way to escape the monotony of the life she shares with her father and sister in the English countryside—and the wagging, ever-critical tongues of the people around her—is through marriage. She also knows the likelihood of it being a love match is nearly zero.

Really wanted to like this book, but disappointed
Revisado: 02-25-24
I put this book in my Wish List as soon as I became aware of it. I love Greek and Roman mythology and the premise of a Hades and Persephone-inspried story set in Regency England appealed to me. Isabella Kamal's writing is good, but the story was long and drawn out (I almost gave up 3/4 of the way through) and her H and H were blah. Their relationship was boring and not at all parallel with the Hades/Persephone myth. The narrator is one I have listened to many times and did a good job, but this was not worth the credit.

Third Book in the Series Does Not Disappoint
Revisado: 02-25-24
I have written positive reviews of all the books in this series and stand by my opinion. Stella Riley has woven an engrossing saga during England's Civil War that pulls you into the lives of the characters and the turbulent time of England's Civil War. Alex Wyndham is the perfect narrator.

Historia
The marriage of a well-bred Royalist lady and an illegitimate Roundhead Colonel is less a match made in heaven than a union doomed to hell. Unfortunately, Sir Robert Brandon's last will and testament leaves Venetia Clifford and Gabriel Brandon with little choice in the matter - deeply though they both resent it. Their tempestuous relationship is reflected in the stormy events buffeting the nation as England slides inexorably into a second Civil War.

Splendid Second Book in the Series
Revisado: 02-25-24
I was wowed by the first book, The Black Madonna, and eagerly started listening to this one. I was not disappointed. The narrator is perfect and the story continues seamlessly from the first adding more depth to characters introduced in The Black Madonna. I do not know enough about England's Civil War, but it is obvious Stella Riley does and is able to weave a story of this complex time in history.

Historia
Still tied to his desk in the Intelligence Office, Colonel Eden Maxwell has become increasingly disenchanted with both Oliver Cromwell and his own daily existence; and with the advent of new Royalist conspiracies, he despairs of ever getting away. Then a brick hurled through the window of a small workshop sets in motion a new and unexpected chain of events. After all, who would want to hurt Lydia Neville—a young widow, giving work and self-respect to maimed war veterans considered unemployable elsewhere?

Exceptional Ending to an Exceptional Series
Revisado: 02-25-24
After listening to the first book in the series, I bought the remaining three. And, it has been among the best I have ever listened to. The final chapter brought all the characters' stories together. I can't recommend this series or this book highly enough. Do listen to the books in order.

Absolutely loved this book and the entire series
Revisado: 02-15-24
I purchased this book a while ago, but only just listened to it and we engrossed in the story and the lives of the characters from the first chapter. There isn't a slow moment or an extraneous story line. I don't know much about England's Civil War, but I assume Stella Riley does. Her writing is engaging, which brings that time period to life dramatically and in a totally believable way. I went on to buy the remaining books in the series and was equally impressed. Go with this one.

I listen to a lot of historical romances so when one really grabs my attention I have to let everyone know. Ava Devlin has written a delightful story with characters that are fully developed, believable and likable. I am hoping there will be sequels. This is more than worth the credit.

Long-winded
Revisado: 11-26-23
I listened to this book on a long drive and though it started off promising, by half-way through it became very, very long-winded. In my opinion, the book should have been more thoroughly edited so that the story of the murder remained the main focus and the action moved along. Instead, even towards the end, the author would put in long text about a character's "development." I had high hopes for this one, but really can't recommend it to anyone.

Evie Harlow is quite content running the quaint little bookshop she inherited from her father…or so she convinces herself anyway. It might not bring in much money, it's not very exciting, and it's not a very good way to meet eligible men, but Evie's always thought she was destined for spinsterhood, a dull life, and hard work.
