Excellent and compelling podcast. We enjoyed The Americans and we’re glad to find this, the true story it is based on.

I just finished reading this, a terrific follow up to the author’s memoir Sting-Ray Afternoons, about growing up in Minnesota in the 1970’s. In this one we follow him through high school, college in Milwaukee, his first article published in Sports Illustrated (on pool champion Willie Mosconi), and the heady days of becoming a staff writer for the magazine in the late 1980’s.

The coast guard scene kills it

This is an interesting story, based on the true story of Betty Klenck. The author had to fill in many parts of the story, though, so he had to fictionalize it. I think the Coast Guard scene is a bit over the top in it’s stereotypical depiction of reaction to women’s emerging roles in the late 1930’s. It is almost cringeworthy and killed the experience for me.

I have been listening to audiobooks for 20+ years, and I almost never give up on one. Redshirts, however, is absolutely unlistenable. Scalzi’s writing style of “He said,” “She said,” back and forth thirty times a page drove me insane. It is bad enough that Scalzi is too lazy to even try to come up with anything else, but when translated into audio format it is downright obnoxious. I am really angry I actually spent money on this and what sh I could get a refund. No more Scalzi books for me, thank you.

I have been a member of Audible for about 15 years I guess, and I thought these podcasts were a good idea at first. But now after downloading and listening to two I have noticed that all the recommendations come from women. That’s great, but there is just so much Jane Austin, The Nightingale, and A Little Life (all worthy recommendations I’m sure) that I can stand. Are there any guys who work at Audible who might be able to put in their two cents worth as well? If not I’d be happy to apply for the job.

Audio problems from book 1 have been fixed. A fun follow up to the first one, and I look forward to the next book - hopefully there will be one.

I enjoyed the book well enough but there were serious problems with the audio levels throughout the book. Every 2-3 lines the reader sinks into a barely audible whisper, and you have to turn it up to hear it, and then the very next line is a shout that nearly blows your ears off. The entire book I had to adjust the volume up and down, up and down. Very frustrating. I’ve never had this happen with an audio book before.

I really enjoyed this. An excellent story well told. It reminded me of a really well done piece on NPR.

I had already read a number of these stories before as some have appeared elsewhere, and a few are already dated with anti-Trump references. That being said, this is a strong collection of stories. Many have a wickedly dark humor that has come on with the author’s age. Some of the stories are laugh-out-loud funny, some are achingly poignant, and many are both. This is the mark of a true wordsmith. David Sedaris is an excellent writer, and is only getting better with age.
