Faced with overwhelming sadness and isolated from the world in his home on the lake, Peart was left without direction. That lack of direction lead him on a 55,000 mile journey by motorcycle across much of North America, down through Mexico to Belize, and back again.

There was no cohesive plot-line to this book. It was a series of random things that he saw or ate or did. Nothing particularly insightful or helpful for someone looking for a path to healing. It may have been cathartic for the author, but I see nothing redeeming for the reader.
Having said that, there were some entertaining moments.

Over the past few years, Brianna Wiest has gained renown for her deeply moving, philosophical writing. This new compilation of her published work features pieces on why you should pursue purpose over passion, embrace negative thinking, see the wisdom in daily routine, and become aware of the cognitive biases that are creating the way you see your life. Some of these pieces have never been seen; others have been read by millions of people around the world. Regardless, each will leave you thinking: This idea changed my life.

Not “essays”, lists
Revisado: 05-24-24
There is no doubt that this book is full of important and potentially life changing information.
The problem is that it is presented as a series of lists, not essays. The sheer volume of information coming at you simply overwhelmed me. I didn’t have time to process one idea before the next one is presented, and then the next one, and then the next one ….
It doesn’t help that it is read to you in an almost monotone voice.

This is one of several books that I have read that give a good perspective on the topic of slavery in the United States. As such, I feel that it should be widely read.

Historia
On the morning after the 2016 presidential election, Thomas Ricks awoke with a few questions on his mind: What kind of nation did we now have? Is it what was designed or intended by the nation's founders? Trying to get as close to the source as he could, Ricks decided to go back and read the philosophy and literature that shaped the founders' thinking, and the letters they wrote to each other debating these crucial works—among them the Iliad, Plutarch's Lives, and the works of Xenophon, Epicurus, Aristotle, Cato, and Cicero.

Why do people believe bunk? And what causes them to embrace such pseudoscientific beliefs and practices? Noted skeptic Massimo Pigliucci sets out to separate the fact from the fantasy in this entertaining exploration of the nature of science, the borderlands of fringe science, and - borrowing a famous phrase from philosopher Jeremy Bentham - the nonsense on stilts.

Malcolm Gladwell has long relished the opportunity to skewer the upper echelons of higher education, from the institution of U.S. News & World Report’s Best College rankings to the LSATs to the luxe Bowdoin College cafeteria. I Hate the Ivy League: Riffs and Rants on Elite Education, upends the traditional thinking around how education should work and tries to get to the bottom of why we often reward the wrong people.

Shines a light on a profoundly silly system
Revisado: 01-17-24
I loved the interview at Yale! It spoke volumes on how greed has tainted things. Yale has $22 billion in their endowment fund. They don’t come close to spending what the fund spits out (tax free). Yet they want more. When asked “how much would be enough”, the answer was they could never have enough.

Hardly a taste
Revisado: 01-07-24
I’ve listened to several books on Greek mythology. In them, you get much more complete stories. This book gives you a Cole’s notes version of a small sampling of Chinese mythology.
I expected more when I purchased, so this book left me disappointed.
The author even states at the end that he has given just a taste so you can choose to dive in deeper. This seems to be a recipe for disappointment. If you want to learn about Chinese mythology, this book leaves you wanting. You are much better off getting a more complete book. I wish I knew of one to recommend.

We live in a world that's very different from the one in which Emily Post came of age. Many of us who are nice (but who also sometimes say "f*ck") are frequently at a loss for guidelines about how to be a good person who deals effectively with the onslaught of rudeness we all encounter. To lead us through this this miasma of modern manners, syndicated columnist Amy Alkon - The Advice Goddess - gives us a new set of manners for our 21st-century lives.

The frequent use of logical fallacies
Revisado: 12-02-23
There are a few wonderful messages in this book, but I found them drowned out by the incessant use of logical fallacies (non-sequiturs, straw man, ad hominem, etc).
The author is no doubt well versed in oratory skills. He uses them throughout to convince the reader of his beliefs. He takes a biological fact, and links it through a non-sequitur to something that he either believes, or simply wants you to believe. These half truths are a lot more convincing than had he just presented his beliefs.
This is a technique used by charlatans.
He also likes to use anecdotal evidence to prove his extraordinary claims. A clear violation of the Sagan law.
This is one of those books where, because the author knows so much about the topic (biology), he is able to bamboozle the readers and thus convince them of anything.

Historia
Studying zoology made Lucy Cooke feel like a sad freak. Not because she loved spiders or would root around in animal feces: All her friends shared the same curious kinks. The problem was her sex. Being female meant she was, by nature, a loser. Since Charles Darwin, evolutionary biologists have been convinced that the males of the animal kingdom are the interesting ones—dominating and promiscuous, while females are dull, passive, and devoted. But Cooke tells a new story.
