This reader does an incredible job
Revisado: 06-21-21
The book is excellent. But I must say, the reader is singularly impressive. It is to be understood if anyone has doubts about the usefulness of audiobooks for such a subject, and I certainly wouldn't recommend relying on this audiobook alone (I also have the paperback), but the reader does an outstanding job making things clear and not getting in the way. Bravo!

Too clownish.
Revisado: 09-03-19
Way too much speculation. He makes the old testament patriarchs seem like sentimental children. Many useful insights peppered in there, but I realized that I was losing reverence for the scriptures listening to this.

Historia
What is "the big lie" of the Democratic Party? That conservatives - and President Donald Trump in particular - are fascists. Nazis, even. In a typical comment, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow says the Trump era is reminiscent of "what it was like when Hitler first became chancellor." But in fact, this audacious lie is a complete inversion of the truth. Yes, there is a fascist threat in America - but that threat is from the Left and the Democratic Party.

Another great book marred by impersonal reading
Revisado: 08-30-19
Dinesh D'Souza is one of the few essential thought leaders of the Republican vision.
The reader, like so many, it would seem, oh-so-misguided audiobook voice talents, is apparently under the impression that he ought to stand mere inches away from the edge of the great nothing of soulless entities, rather than be a normal, warm-blooded human being reading a book. It truly seems like these people are doing their level best to *not* have the book come alive. The most obvious and natural interpretive choices regarding where to place the stress in a sentence are bulldozed into a forced monotony. I assume they are trying to provide a "neutral" reading. "Dead" is not neutral for us humans.

Unfortunate choice of reader for a good book
Revisado: 08-30-19
The reader does not have any tangible sense of reverence in her reading. She would, perhaps, do a great job in other genres, but it was very distracting when speaking of holy things.
Four stars for the book. For the audiobook -- two or three.

Masterful reading. (Abysmal music)
Revisado: 08-08-19
Glyn is truly a master of his craft. He brings the text alive with a keen sense for the authors' style, without taking too many interpretive liberties.
But... who...?!? Who on God's green Earth thought that adding that saccharine, sappy, sentimental trash they stole from a third rate children's cartoon and added as "music" to some of the New Testament was a good idea? Imagine Jesus overturning tables to Barney singing "we're a happy family" and you'll get the idea. In moments I had to burst out laughing just to keep from breaking things at the sacrilege.

Revisado: 08-08-19
New to the Tao te ching. Really enjoyed listening to this at the end of my 16 hour day. Mitchell seems like he is floating in the fog over San Francisco, but in a good way. Beautiful work on the whole. Of course, I wouldn't dare "rate" or "review" Lao Tzu's classic itself.

Historia
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

Surprisingly affecting; Low/high vol needs work
Revisado: 08-08-19
Beautiful piece. Worth listening--definitely paid off giving this a go. One gripe: sometimes I'd have to turn the volume all the way up (on my earbuds) to try and make out what an interviewee was saying, only to have the narrator blast my eardrums to hell in the next bit.

Historia
Dr. Rupert Sheldrake, one of the world's most innovative scientists, here shows the ways in which science is being constricted by assumptions that have, over the years, hardened into dogmas. Such dogmas are not only limiting, but dangerous for the future of humanity. According to these principles, all of reality is material or physical; the world is a machine, made up of inanimate matter; nature is purposeless; consciousness is nothing but the physical activity of the brain; free will is an illusion; and God exists only as an idea in human minds.
