Historia
As eager as Beatrice, Duchess of Kesgrave, is to meet her husband’s newly discovered illegitimate half sister, she does not want it to happen like this: in the keeper's house at Newgate. Yes, that Newgate, the abject prison filled with squalor and misery to which Verity Lark has been consigned for murder. Found standing over the slain corpse of an old tormentor with a still-warm pistol in her hand, she is obviously guilty. It is an open-and-shut case with little for an unduly curious duchess to investigate. Except it all seems a little too simple and straightforward.

A Vicious Machination

Another good addition to the series. This one has a bit more tension as the accused is a character we care a lot about. (Assuming you’ve been keeping up with the Verity Lark spin-off series. If not, what are you doing?) Not as much main character development as I might have liked, but the plot was engaging enough to keep me interested.

Historia
Bedeviled by Colson Hardwicke’s treatment—summarily dumping her via tersely worded message!—Verity Lark is lying awake in her bed seething over his behavior when she hears a floorboard creak. Immediately alert to the presence of a late-night intruder, she deftly thwarts the attack. Taking her would-be kidnapper captive is easy. Figuring out what he wants with her—well, that part is tricky and she wonders if it could have something to do with one of her many alter egos.

Another very enjoyable adventure in this series. I continue to be frustrated by Hardwicke’s - Verity’s too, but mostly Hardwicke’s - (mis)handling of their relationship. (Healthy communication, people!) The interactions between Verity and her friends really stood out to me in this book. A lot of it is funny, but you can also see how deeply they care about each other. As always there is an interesting mystery with good investigation and a satisfying conclusion.

Historia
Beatrice, Duchess of Kesgrave, emerges from a wretched night’s sleep to discover him embracing the most beautiful woman she has ever seen. His former mistress! It is shocking, yes, but not so very alarming, for Penelope Taylor is actually there to see Bea. Her dearest friend has been brutally slain, and as Millicent Lloyd happened to be sleeping in the courtesan’s bed at the time, Mrs. Taylor is the only suspect. The magistrate is impatient to cart her off to Newgate and refuses to acknowledge the truth that is glaringly obvious to her: She was the intended victim.

Another solid entry in the series. The mystery is engaging and there was some good character development that I found to be satisfying. There was also a rather lengthy conversation relating Kesgrave’s interactions with Verity in ‘A Lark’s Flight’ which I found to be exceedingly entertaining.

"Myths of the Norsemen" by H.A. Guerber is an extensive retelling of the legends and myths of the Norse pantheon. Published in the early 20th century, Guerber's work is one of the most comprehensive and accessible English renditions of the stories of the Norse gods, goddesses, heroes, and the world they inhabit.

For the most part, I really enjoyed this mythology collection. It was well presented and, because this collection includes four separate books, there are quite often multiple versions of the same story. I find it fascinating to be able to see multiple takes on the same tale.
My favorite aspect of this collection is that, in the book containing the Poetic Edda, there are extensive notes accompanying each poem containing things like historic context, notes on meter and composition, and discussion of origin theories.

Each of the books included in this collection is good on its own, so having them together is a straight improvement. In addition to the collected stories, each book includes a historical introduction that helps provide context and deeper understanding of the contents. The narration is clear and pleasant, making this a very solid audiobook production.

Verity Lark—England's most tenacious gossip, the London Daily Gazette's most dogged reporter—relishes a challenge, which is why she refuses Colson Hardwicke's offer of menial employment. If the infuriating scoundrel really needs the sister of a radical reformer to be distracted with girlish chitchat, he can bloody well erupt into giggles!

This installment contained rather higher stakes than the last, which I quite enjoyed. I also appreciated the relationship development between Verity and Hardwicke, though at times I wanted to scream at them to just *talk to each other!* although I understand why they did not. (*grumble grumble* professional pride *grumble*) In any case, I greatly enjoyed this book, with my favorite parts being the interactions between Verity and Kesgrave, which I found to be both enlightening and entertaining.

This set contains the second half (books 3-5) of this series. I found book three to be particularly intense, but that’s at least partially due to its dealing with one of my personal hang-ups. Overall, I’ve really enjoyed this series and I think this collection presents it well. The end of the series has decent closure with enough loose ends left to spark interest in the spin-off series.

Australian Aboriginal Mythology

This audiobook consists of three separate volumes compiled by different people, focusing on stories from different regions/tribes. This is interesting because there are sometimes multiple stories explaining the same thing in different ways. For instance, there are at least two separate origin stories for the Pleiades in the first two volumes. I enjoy comparing mythologies, so I find this type of thing fascinating. As always, the narrator is solid and the book is arranged sensibly with some good historical context added.
