Historia
MEM is a rare novel, a small book carrying very big ideas, the kind of story that stays with you long after you've finished listening to it. Set in the glittering art deco world of a century ago, MEM makes one slight alteration to history: a scientist in Montreal discovers a method allowing people to have their memories extracted from their minds, whole and complete.

A slightly storied info dump of a concept
Revisado: 02-18-24
It's an interesting dive into a concept like eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, but with story lines. I've gotten halfway though and the book reads like an info dump of a concept with some emotions peppered in, and the main character info dumping the perceived perspective of side characters to show different ways this idea can be shown in the world. the whole thing is a bit of a sentimental thought experiment, I don't think it's bad, but the narrorator makes the main character sounds bit more fragile than the text discribes.

kind of a author stand in wish fulfillment thing
Revisado: 02-02-23
It was fine. No real challenges to the protagonists, everything was an earth analog, and everything was unsurprising. Dude wrote a story where he was magically smarter stronger and more clever than everyone, and then wandered around the universe. he was kinda challenged, then overcame but the evil bad guy just got just in time, and ready for the sequel.

lots of exposition dump.
Revisado: 11-14-22
not as good as the first two. the audiostyle is well done if you like the audio play thing, but for me is a bit distracting and over the top. the story is a bit slow and not actually in golatha and seems to be written for people who skipped the first two books. there's a lot of exposition for who everyone is over and over again. story was fun a bit of a shallow take on some big issue it was trying to take on, but not bad for a fluffy book. in general a fun popcorn story.

Sy Montgomery's popular 2011 Orion magazine piece, "Deep Intellect", about her friendship with a sensitive, sweet-natured octopus named Athena and the grief she felt at her death, went viral, indicating the widespread fascination with these mysterious, almost alien-like creatures. Since then Sy has practiced true immersion journalism, from New England aquarium tanks to the reefs of French Polynesia and the Gulf of Mexico, pursuing these wild, solitary shape-shifters.

sentimental reflection light on facts
Revisado: 08-04-22
everything she says you can learn on a wiki search in 5 minutes with just about similar depth. her main contribution after that is various versions of "isn't it cool and not like a human" sprinkled between sentiment reflection on her hanging around the aquarium and Scooba diving the her friends lives. narration was fine, but kinda like listening to an aunt humble bragging about her Scooba trips around the world.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

excellent if this is your thing
Revisado: 06-13-21
loved this book. couldn't stop and read it one sitting. don't get hung up on the numbers, they just serve the mood. takes a sec to get into the groove of the story, but then it's so poetic and almost meditative. it's written in a observation journal form. the author is good at this kind of detached observations turning bit emotive obsession. similar to norell in that way. I think if you enjoyed this you'll enjoy that. it's nice though because this one was shorter.

For generations, the solar system—Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt—was humanity's great frontier. Until now. The alien artifact working through its program under the clouds of Venus has appeared in Uranus's orbit, where it has built a massive gate that leads to a starless dark. Jim Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are part of a vast flotilla of scientific and military ships going out to examine the artifact. But behind the scenes, a complex plot is unfolding, with the destruction of Holden at its core.

Someones DND campaign with too much backstory
Revisado: 01-15-20
This is not the same author who did children of time. This is his alter ego dnd campaign. it seems to start like a critique of tropes and explore the after the fight scenario which was an interesting idea of reconciliation, or politics, or something unique. power grabbing? but 9 houra in the characters never really develope beyond the trope. and the plot ignores all the possibilities amd decides its just going to devolve into a McGuffin search with the player joing on for whatever thin reason. and its boring the action is stale, the plot seems to be picked up in the end of the story. but most of the writing is an info dump on what happened before when the irrationally evil evil super bad guy was being super evil to eveyone. and the characters sing a song so they have feelings too! i get a slow burn book. but 9 hours in and im giving up.
