Historia
From legendary Brazilian jujitsu and MMA master Rickson Gracie comes a riveting, insightful memoir that weaves together the story of Gracie’s stunning career with the larger history of the Gracie family dynasty and the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, showing how the connection between mind and body can be harnessed for success both inside and outside the ring.

Raw and honest tour de force
Revisado: 11-15-23
I had this book for months on my device. I found reasons to read others. Part of me was concerned that it would turn into a Gracie infomercial - and it could not have been more different.
Rickson lays out an absolutely incredible journey as a person. He connects many of his achievements to Gracie family dynamics but not in a manner that is anything but completely honest.
It made me think about my journey and how deprioritizing nonsense and increasing focus matters. How honor and virtue are attainable while being flawed.
Thank you for writing this book. It is one I will likely re-read every decade ahead.

Historia
As a senior non-commissioned officer of Delta Force, the most elite and secretive special operations unit in the US military, Command Sergeant Major Tom Satterly fought some of this country's most fearsome enemies. Tom is a legend even among other Tier One special operators. Yet the enemy that cost him three marriages, and ruined his health physically and psychologically, existed in his brain. Told through Satterly's firsthand experiences, it also weaves in the reasons for his career-long battle against the most insidious enemy of all: post-traumatic stress.

Revisado: 11-12-23
Tom, thank you for writing this book. It was one of the most profoundly eye opening literary experiences I’ve had. You laid it all on the line multiple times over and the manner, entirely relatable, that you present it in adds more power to it. I wish you and Jenn the best moving forward. We need to get “All Secure.”

Historia
On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

Great story - Horrific narration
Revisado: 09-17-22
Jack Carr has produced an excellent piece of fiction. It's interesting, the character development is great, the story flows naturally, and then...there's the narration. Good God, does Ray Porter suck at this. How did anyone ever consider allowing this dude to mimick voices, especially female ones?
It is so cringeworthy I had to shut it off. Good for Amazon and Jack, I purchased the Kindle version and am now reading the book.
But for the love of all that is good, don't ever let Porter ruin another great book.

Historia
It was a mild May morning in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1862, the second year of the Civil War, when a 23-year-old slave named Robert Smalls did the unthinkable and boldly seized a Confederate steamer. With his wife and two young children hidden on board, Smalls and a small crew ran a gauntlet of heavily armed fortifications in Charleston Harbor and delivered the valuable vessel and the massive guns it carried to nearby Union forces.

One of America's first Commandos
Revisado: 09-17-22
As I listened to Robert Smalls' story, I kept finding myself more and more surprised that I'd never heard of him.
Smalls essentially lived up to an ethos of bravery, duty, and commitment that most people can't fathom. He did so with humility but never lost sight of his goals. The fact that we don't hear about him blows my mind.
This book is a page-turner, and just when you think Smalls is done, he comes out swinging and levels up again.
Brilliant man, story, and something everyone in America should read.

If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.

Where JLC would have spent a brutal amount of time with the mundane details, BM shifts from one character to another, setting the pace for an unstoppable listening experience.

Insightful and actionable
Revisado: 05-11-21
“If you haven't read hundreds of books, learning from others who went before you, you are functionally illiterate – you can't coach and you can't lead,” - Gen. Mattis
The above quote gives you insight into what you should expect from this book. General Mattis dives deep into what made him who he is today. The book also distills that which matters - standing up for convictions and taking care to make others understand how they add value to a mission.
I greatly enjoyed the narration and never felt like the book went down political or personal agendas.
This book was a joy to read and I'm sure I will revisit it every few years.

Excellent insights

I truly enjoyed reading this book.
A friend of mine, moving from a senior manager role, eyeing a COO position, recommended it. He mentioned the profound impact many of the small things he did every day prior to reading the book, and the changes he had made since, as key reasons for his ascent to the COO position.
I’ve picked up on at least a half dozen things I routinely failed to control and am hoping that I also show improvement towards everyone, my family and friends included.
Would highly recommend this book to anyone, for any reason, as we all have room to improve ourselves.
Thank you for writing this book, Marshall.

A deep-dive into a classic blunder
Revisado: 06-11-19
Overall this book has offered a ton of insight but I have to force myself to continue reading it. It's just...long. Incredibly long. And maybe I'm lacking the focus I need to ingest the information but the narrator isn't making this any easier. I'll likely try to push for completion on this during an upcoming transatlantic flight.

Are you tired of feeling f*cked up? If you are, Gary John Bishop has the answer. In this straightforward handbook, he gives you the tools and advice you need to demolish the slag weighing you down and become the truly unf--ked version of yourself. "Wake up to the miracle you are," he directs. "Here's what you've forgotten: You're a f--king miracle of being." It isn't other people that are standing in your way; it isn't even your circumstances that are blocking your ability to thrive. It's yourself and the negative self-talk you keep telling yourself.

Revisado: 06-11-19
The book does hold a lot of value. The author made sure not to stuff it with filler. Concepts are clearly presented and the author walks the reader to their own conclusions. Have recommended it to others because it will be hard to find another 3.5 hour read that hits home that seriously.

Historia
For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

Brilliant
Revisado: 12-09-18
Having read Michelle McNamara’s excellent book, and a variety of articles, podcasts, and interviews...I wasn’t sure how much more this book could add or that there would be compelling content.
It wasn’t the first or last time I’m glad I didn’t let my assumptions guide me.
The book is excellent. The format of introduction, explanation, and SME background information, adds a different feel and dimension to the material.
Rather than sitting through a read of facts and assumptions, you get a perfectly connecting storyline from multiple perspectives of those who survived, barely escaped, and hunted JJD.
I would unequivocally call this Audible’s book of the year not only for its production but for what it represents - groundbreaking advancement of criminal investigation by hard working people from all walks of life.
