Amazing reading of this unique story
Revisado: 10-06-23
I always love listening to James’s books. This one was no different. The story itself is very interesting and there’s a lot to unpack. Rural VS urban. Educated VS “backwards”. Good VS evil. God VS devil. And sex throughout. This is worth listening to but hard to hear about the child abuse.

Historia
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

So glad I finally got to read/listen to this book
Revisado: 09-02-23
This is a story I’ve been interested in learning for many years. The organization works well to convey both the Lacks story and the research behind the book. It’s a mix of history and biology, an important piece of human medical history, and reveals so much about the Black experience in the US.
The readers were good but sometimes it was a bit confusing whose voice I was listening to.

Historia
Tiffany can't avoid being funny: it's just who she is. But The Last Black Unicorn is so much more than a side-splittingly hilarious collection of essays - it's a memoir of the struggles of one woman who came from nothing and nowhere. A woman who was able to achieve her dreams by reveling in her pain and awkwardness, showing the world who she really is, and inspiring others through the power of laughter.

Loved it but difficult subject matter
Revisado: 07-18-21
I don’t know how she does it, but Haddish shares her very difficult experiences in a way that’s lighthearted and even funny. I highly recommend this book and hope she writes more!!

Historia
Eleven-year-old George Washington Black—or Wash—a field slave on a Barbados sugar plantation, is initially terrified when he is chosen as the manservant of his master’s brother. To his surprise, however, the eccentric Christopher Wilde turns out to be a naturalist, explorer, inventor, and abolitionist. Soon Wash is initiated into a world where a flying machine can carry a man across the sky, where even a boy born in chains may embrace a life of dignity and meaning, and where two people, separated by an impossible divide, can begin to see each other as human.

Lots of unanswered questions
Revisado: 11-28-20
I liked the overall premise and plot. It’s imaginative and makes me wonder if Edugyan based part of her story or characters on real sources. The narrator did a great job with voice and tone, but I found it hard to follow the story. It moves quickly between scenes and locations, and a lot of issues still felt unresolved at the end. It may be the type of book to read myself, rather than listen to it.

Draws you into the world of Jamaica under slavery from the start
Revisado: 03-15-19
Robin Miles couldn’t have delivered Marlon James’s words better. I love this story of powerful but complicated women. Do you know Jamaica’s history? Read this book. Do you know how enslaved people survived, resisted, loved under slavery? Read this book. Thank you, James and Miles for your beautiful work!
