Well written but disappointing
Revisado: 01-28-25
This was well researched but contains some important distinctions between the real Deborah and the fictionalized one.The book was so good that I felt it was a disservice to the real historic person and was left very disappointed that the author took so much liberty with the life story of a real person.

Good book
Revisado: 01-08-25
I completely enjoy the story, but the narration by the author is pretty monotone. She’s working so hard to have good diction that it comes across as broken and without emotion.

Great Abridged Version

This is a beautiful narration of a lovely book. But it’s the abridged version and I want the whole book. The other narration isn’t nearly as good though.

Left me feeling ill
Revisado: 04-21-23
There is so much about this book that was almost good. The story is bland with no real drama. Mostly though, it just left me sick to my stomach. I’m sure the WASPs love the book.

Historia
When Desert Solitaire was first published in 1968, it became the focus of a nationwide cult. Rude and sensitive. Thought-provoking and mystical. Angry and loving. Both Abbey and this book are all of these and more. Here, the legendary author of The Monkey Wrench Gang, Abbey's Road and many other critically acclaimed books vividly captures the essence of his life during three seasons as a park ranger in southeastern Utah.

Wrong narrator!
Revisado: 10-05-22
I would not have downloaded this book if I had paid attention to the narrator. I love this book so much I didn’t even listen to the narration clip because how can you wreck Edward Abbey? Five minutes in and I just can’t. The narration is monotone and sleepy, like a guy who’s had a few drinks and just talks because he likes the sound of his voice and assumes people are listening, or an old college professor who just drones on and on. I’ve tried listening to other books with the same narrator and I just can’t. I listen to audiobooks during long drives for my job or when doing projects around my house and just can’t deal with a narrator who puts me to sleep, especially with such great content to work with!

Monotone narration
Revisado: 10-05-22
I just can’t finish this book with that narrator. Id probably like the book more if the narration didn’t put me to sleep. I’ve come across several audiobooks narrated by Michael Kramer and even for books I’ve read and enjoyed, I just can’t listen to this guy.

Historia
The vengeful King Schahriar agrees to stave off the execution of Queen Scheherazade until she finishes a particularly compelling story. Her plan? Bleed one tale into another. Through fanciful histories, romances, tragedies, comedies, poems, riddles, and songs, Scheherazade prolongs her life by holding the king’s rapt attention. With origins in Persian and Eastern Indian folklore, the stories of The Arabian Nights have been reworked, reshaped, revised, collected, and supplemented throughout the centuries by various authors and scholars.

Could Audible not just let us know that this is a middle school appropriate version? As a adult, I prefer the full telling.

Okay
Revisado: 11-09-18
I kept listening because other reviews said things like “touching” and “heartwarming”. If you come from a family with abuse or mental illness, consider this your trigger warning. In the end, I’m kinda left feeling empty. I get why people like the story, but for those of us who’ve actually dealt with extremely toxic people and been through therapy, this book leaves a lot to be desired.
