Not Randell's best, but still very good
Revisado: 11-04-24
Liked the tongue in cheek humour that characterised all of the various people that you meet in the apartment build-ing. Also the curious suspense of the crimes that occurred in the plot.

Historia
In the long, hot summer of 1976, a group of young people is camping in Wyvis Hall. Adam, Rufus, Shiva, Vivien and Zosie hardly ask why they are there or how they are to live; they scavenge, steal and sell the family heirlooms. Ten years later, the bodies of a woman and child are discovered in the Hall’s animal cemetery. Which woman? And whose child?

One of the best mysteries...of THE best writer
Revisado: 04-12-20
Ruth Rendell at the height of her power. I only wish she had not passed away.
In this story her descriptions and characters never are off.
While in the plot she surprises at every turn. you realize how true each character is to him or herself. There is the combination of the chilling aberration of the strange, mentally ill elfin Zoey. and the more "everyday" (yet equally chilling) evil of Rufus., Shiva and their friends.
Added to that the descriptions of the gorgeous manor of Ecalpemos --the setting for the events...and you have a book that is perfect I every way.

A body is discovered deep in a cave beneath the Yorkshire Dales. Leading the investigation into the mysterious death are experienced DCI Jim Oldroyd and his partner DS Carter, a newcomer from London. The deceased is Dave Atkins, well known throughout the village but not well liked. While there is no shortage of suspects, the details of the crime leave Oldroyd and Carter stumped.

too many suspects to follow with just audio...
Revisado: 09-10-19
got the characters all mixed up even toward the end and had to keep rewinding many simular names Craven. Cartwright Carver etc.
Also the motive was VERY UNSWALLOWABLE. LIKED THE narrator tho and the accent and the descriptions and poems about the caves...
if I'd got whisper sync it would have been fine.

Historia
Like most families, they had their secrets...and they hid them under a genteelly respectable veneer. No onlooker would guess that prim Vera Hillyard and her beautiful, adored younger sister, Eden, were locked in a dark and bitter combat over one of those secrets. England in the '50s was not kind to women who erred, so they had to use every means necessary to keep the truth hidden behind closed doors - even murder.

Best of Ruth R endell's (Vines) novels
Revisado: 08-14-18
Depiction of a fascinating, tragic. tale that could probably only have happened at that time and place. In 1940s England-- with a description of place and character as perfect in each detail as. ever done.
The author here is at the height of her power-- which is saying a lot!

okay Good plot but hard to follow w just audio. C
Revisado: 05-14-18
Cons:the detective was a little too good to be real. and usually humorless
it was overly wordy at times. explaining police procedurals. and descriptons were put in that seemed long and unnecessary at times.
Great plot tho!

Historia
When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

Great writing w poor ending that was unbelievable
Revisado: 01-25-18
Wellwritten and 2 mysteries for the price of one. Narration was wonderful! (even tho I normally prefer male voices.) BUT unfortunately the #2 plot relied on character assassination which always seems like cheating to me and makes the end a bit disappointing. Still it's a great read and I will try Horowitz again for his Holmes book.

Great book that's hard to put down
Revisado: 12-10-16
Only quibble is that he could have identified the birds better and added a sequel to the 2016 edition to tell if Salvador really changed his life around like he promised to do while he was adrift
For this genre it is very well written imp and certainly the castaway fisherman displayed superhuman mental and physical strength!
Glad I bought it😊
