In Unruly, David Mitchell explores how early England’s monarchs, while acting as feared rulers firmly guiding their subjects’ destinies, were in reality a bunch of lucky bastards who were mostly as silly and weird in real life as they appear today in their portraits.

Laughter; the best medicine for ignorance.
Revisado: 02-03-25
Let me just start by saying it is a great cursory overview of not just all the kings of England but medieval English history in general. Another thing this does a fantastic job of doing is explaining to the audience why one might want to have a king or what joy or pleasure one might take from it. As an American this has always seemed very foreign to me and I can't help but think of the first time I read through the Lord of the rings not just saw the movies. In those novels there is a deep and abiding respect for the idea of nobility whether this is baragond remarking about his faith and love for his captain faramir. Or just the general reverence the people of Gondor have to the idea that Aragon might be the inheritor of the throne. I never understood these things and in fact reading through the novel I found them very dated and dare I say even ignorant. The truth is that I was ignorant this book explains in a way I have never been exposed to before why somebody might want to have a king and to really put into stark contrast the other options of the day.
Finally let me say that this book is laugh out loud funny, I found that the jokes and the humor led to me remembering things that I would probably not have I will forever think about waging wars over whether life is haha funny or peculiar funny and I am never going to forget that God wants the mugger to have that heroin or else he wouldn't have let him steal your phone.

Historia
Steffan Dekkard is an isolate, one of the small percentage of people who are immune to the projections of empaths. As an isolate, he has been trained as a security specialist, and he and his security partner Avraal Ysella, a highly trained empath, are employed by Axel Obreduur, a senior Craft Minister and the de facto political strategist of his party. When a respected Landor Councilor dies of “heart failure” at a social event, because of his political friendship with Obreduur, Dekkard and Ysella find that not only is their employer a target, but so are they.

Low magic, Low steampunk, High politics.
Revisado: 02-06-23
For me, one of the most important things in a fantasy universe is the system of magic. I like when we have a system that we can understand and that plays by its own rules. There are times in this novel when you forget that there is even magic going on it's very subtle it's very intriguing, and even though it's low-key, the way it influences the world is fascinating.
This book is before anything else before it's a fantasy book before its steam punk noire it is a political thriller. They did a great job of making the issues of industrialization parallel to our modern-day issues of autotimization. They also approach Issues of crony capitalism in a way that feels like it could have been happening in the senate in the antibellum days all the way up to the present.

Historia
Minalan the Spellmonger has a problem: Mycin Amana, the undead consort of Korbal the Necromancer, is not only occupying one of the largest castles in the kingdom; she’s also occupying the recently-dead body of his former lover, rapist, and mother of his children, Isily of Greenflower. As the crises in the heart of the kingdom grows, Minalan is tasked to force the so-called Witch Queen of Darkfaller from her new stronghold using any means necessary. Unfortunately, the castle belongs to his rival in the royal court and future monarch Prince Tavard, whose ideas are doomed to failure.

Not what we were waiting for.
Revisado: 12-08-22
I am only 7 hours into the novel so I will start with that. While I have read all canonical stories in the series that come before this that is to say the numbered ones not the cadet stories. This is likely to be where I put the series down. I have many criticisms and definitely feel as if he has lost what made this series engaging in the first place. the overwhelming mass of my criticism has to be on the character gatina. she was a poorly written Trope of a cliche to begin with, her whole family is not original they don't feel like they add anything to the story but that's okay it's a big book it's allowed to have cliches to fill out the pages.
With her it goes beyond that though because it is disgustingly cringy and predatory that everyone calls her a kitten. when we met her brother he was younger than she now is in the story and yet he was a cat. so I ask you why is it she is still a kitten despite clearly being old enough where other members of her family were considered a cat. the short answer is pedophilia, it is the sexualization of children when they're women it's disgusting and every time I read anyone but her boyfriend call her the kitten of Shadow I vomit in my mouth.

Well paced, well written.

it's definitely a book that keeps you engaged the action the character building and even the World building all merged together well. it's all I could do to not listen to it in one sitting I'm certainly excited to pick up the second one. there were instances in the book that I felt were perhaps a little cliche but I think often they were done both with the a unique spin and as a well-meaning homage
