must read book
Revisado: 08-12-19
I read the hardcover and when I heard Nick was narrating it I had to have it. it is even better read by him. the no nonsense philosophy and outlook is pure, useful, timeless and relevant. this guy is a straight up woodworking warrior poet. I wish I could hang out with him to buy him a beer and just relish nature. my only man-crush in life is Nick!

Decent idea Gimped by Plot and Writing
Revisado: 07-29-14
Would you try another book from Larry Correia and/or Oliver Wyman?
I might but I'd probably pay more attention to the reviews before I did so.
What was most disappointing about Larry Correia’s story?
The writing is full of tired and cheesy catchphrases, obvious logic flaws and appears to have been written by and for a 6-8th grade audience.
What does Oliver Wyman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The narrator makes decent work out of poor dialog. He carries differences of characters well and I don't take any fault with the narration. Most of the issues are with the story and dialog itself.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Monster Hunter International?
This whole thing needs a re-write and uplevel to be decent. I'm still plowing through and I haven't/won't give up but it feels like a chore listening to the substandard dialog.
Any additional comments?
This may be aimed at a young adult crowd but it's still insulting.

Historia
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Continued Engaging work from BV Larson
Revisado: 05-16-14
Would you listen to Steel World again? Why?
I would and will listen this book again. The story has great pacing and is an easy to consume book. This isn't heavy fiction but very enjoyable and great pacing and story make it easy to enjoy. There is enough development of the work to imagine a lot that can be done with the story line.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Steel World?
***SPOILER*** The perma-death and eventual rebirth of the protagonist. Love it. There were multiple cases where I was laughing out loud at some of the interplay between the main character and his "sidekick" antics.
Which character – as performed by Mark Boyett – was your favorite?
It would have to be the James McGill character. He is an understable if simple rougish type guy that is the sort of everyman that anyone living has had a chance to know. There is an undeniable frank fairness in him that makes him likeable but at the same time not a dudley doright but just a regular guy doing what he thinks is right.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Dying is only just the beginning

A departure from the original series
Revisado: 05-16-14
Is there anything you would change about this book?
This is a significant departure from the original series focusing much more heavily on the political intrigue and aspects of the disfunction inside the Alliance. I found the original books to be much more enagaging as they were more focused on the space battle and exploration that I found so engaging. This book really was a slog for me to complete. I don't know that I'll continue the series given this change in focus. It isn't until the very last scene of the book that anything approaching the old battle description really comes back to the forefront.
Has Steadfast turned you off from other books in this genre?
No.
Which scene was your favorite?
I particularly like the fleets exploration of the Sol system and the tie in to present day earth history. This was a pretty cool device and it's intriguing to think about.
Do you think Steadfast needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I hope any follow up goes back to the roots of the brilliant battle strategist. It appears from the ending this is getting set up with the introduction of a challenging foe but time will tell. There is a lot of unresolved plat surrounding the dancers and I'd be very interested in hearing more about how they fit into the overall framework. Not to mention rich setup on the Enigma and Kick races so there is a wealth of context that could use building.

Not his best
Revisado: 02-01-09
I had a very hard time getting through this book. The irritating and insipid characters made me thing this was a high school student practicing at their first character driven piece of fiction. If you are a fan of his other works you may be disappointed if you were expecting the quality of his previous pieces. In the end it was, in my opinion, an experiment that didn't pan out for the author. I hope he refocuses his efforts on Sci-Fi which he is clearly more adept at producing.

Good Reading Questionable Writing
Revisado: 10-08-07
While I found the topic compelling and the action sequences illustrative the authors tired stereotypes grew tiresome and were pretty appalling in some instances. The reader showed skills at portraying recognizable characterization although some of the southern accents and voices were so similar as to be hard to differentiate. In all it wasn't really the material as much as the authors racial and geographical portrayals and references that were pretty insensitive. If you like post-apocalyptic books you'll probably find this an interesting listen with better writing the underlying ideas could have been the underpinnings of a great story.
