Historia
In this exquisitely written new audiobook by the author of A Paradise Built in Hell, Rebecca Solnit explores the ways we make our lives out of stories, and how we are connected by empathy, by narrative, by imagination. In the course of unpacking some of her own stories - of her mother and her decline from memory loss, of a trip to Iceland, of an illness - Solnit revisits fairytales and entertains other stories.

Historia
At the dawn of the 1950s, a promising and dedicated young painter named Helen Frankenthaler, fresh out of college, moved back home to New York City to make her name. By the decade's end, she had succeeded in establishing herself as an important American artist of the postwar period. In the years in between, she made some of the most daring, head-turning paintings of her day and also came into her own as a woman: traveling the world, falling in and out of love, and engaging in an ongoing artistic education.

interesting informative
Revisado: 09-06-21
I enjoyed the book. I came away with a different view of Frankenthaler than before. I found the Helen voice very condescending and uppity. I guess that is how some people saw her. It took away from the story for me. but good book anyway

Enchanting
Revisado: 07-07-21
I found this story enchanting. I have taken a week since listening to it to digest the story. I love Lenora Carrington her work is unusual and odd. Her short stories are also strange, surreal, fascinating.
One critique is that the descriptions of her mental health issues went on too long. Although the descriptions seemed accurate.
I found the rest of the story more interesting. Her relationship with Max Ernst was certainly passionate and loving but doomed like young love often is. I liked the book very much.

Historia
Surrealist writer and painter Leonora Carrington was a master of the macabre, of gorgeous tableaus, biting satire, roguish comedy, and brilliant, effortless flights of the imagination. Nowhere are these qualities more ingeniously brought together than in the works of short fiction she wrote throughout her life.

Eva Luna stories are still poignant
Revisado: 01-31-20
I read Eva Luna many years ago and wanted to revisit it again. The narrator was wonderful and I appreciated her interpretation of the stories. Isabel Allende is such a fantastic storyteller there were moments when I was amazed by the story. A few times I had to turn it off and think about how perfectly her words are crafted.

Great mystery
Revisado: 01-31-20
This was a good story and a good mystery. However there were too many side stories that didn't play a role in the overall story. One that comes to mind is the mothers hospitalization. I often felt I was waiting to get back to the real story while I listened to side stories. I like the plot and the outcome. But wished there was more focus on the 2 main stories.

Historia
C. S. Lewis is the 20th century's most widely read Christian writer and J. R. R. Tolkien its most beloved mythmaker. For three decades they and their closest associates formed a literary club known as the Inklings, which met weekly in Lewis' Oxford rooms and a nearby pub. They read aloud from works in progress, argued about anything that caught their fancy, and gave one another invaluable companionship, inspiration, and criticism.

The Fellowship of the Inkings
Revisado: 12-06-19
I listened to this book on Audible in the car while traveling. It was quite fascinating and informative. Although a bit dry, I think it was worth the time and effort. It would be an excellent college text.
Each of the Inklings: Tolkien, Lewis, Williams, and Barfield, were discussed by the authors in individual biographical terms. Further discussion included the Inklings personal associations with each other. For example, The Inklings’ met 2 times a week for close to 40 years. Their meetings were comprised of great discussions and the reading of new chapters aloud from their current works. The relationships between the Inklings and the interchange between the members is also a theme throughout. The Inkling members had similar backgrounds and devotion to various Christian beliefs, this allowed for debate, and deep conversations about their work and their philosophies of life.
The Inklings appear in various degrees to have had healthy imaginary lives as children. That creativity helped them focus on the study of fairytales, mythologies, cultures, and religious beliefs. Their youthful interest fostered the foundations that allowed for adult imaginings and fairy tales that continued to inspire their writing.
I cannot say I would have read the book cover to cover because it was a bit like a college textbook. But listening to it enabled me to enjoy the process of learning about the Inklings in more depth. I believe that for Tolkien or Lewis fans this is a fascinating read.
