In the most famous scandal of sports history, eight Chicago White Sox players - including Shoeless Joe Jackson - agreed to throw the 1919 World Series to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for the promise of $20,000 each from gamblers reportedly working for New York mobster Arnold Rothstein. Heavily favored, Chicago lost the Series five games to three. Although rumors of a fix flew while the series was being played, they were largely disregarded by players and the public at large.

Great telling of a truly American story

I really enjoyed the book. It covers the 1919 scandal but also provides context by covering the history of gambling and fixing of games that occurred from the 1870s up into the early 20th century.
After reading this I really would like to follow it up with an anthology of some of the sports writing presented in the book. After all this was how most of America followed the game during the time.
Here’s hoping Shoeless Joe gets into the Hall of Fame.

In 'The Fat Man', young boys learn the hard way that some mysteries should not be investigated. Many of the tales are truly weird, such as 'Chompers', the story of the false teeth with an appetite.

Yeah I agree the narration is kind of difficult to get into at first but give it a chance. The narration works with Lansdale's stories.
The stories themselves are imaginatively humorous and horrifically horrible. I especially like the ghost fish and the choppers stories.

One of the best monster books that I have read. Read it as a kid loved it. Now as an adult I enjoy the cautious tone it sets in regards to unbridled scientific investigation and even an alternate reason for pursuing environmentalism. Anyway life will find away.

The main plot of the story was interesting. It reminded me of the goldfinch with a salingeresque box of notebooks rather than a painting. A nice enjoyable thriller that moves from the past, present, and hints to interesting things to come in the future.
