Historia
This sweeping book is a systematic treatment of the historic transformation of the West from limited monarchy to unlimited democracy. Revisionist in nature, it reaches the conclusion that monarchy, with all its failings, is a lesser evil than mass democracy but outlines deficiencies in both as systems of guarding liberty.

Excellent book, excellent narration
Revisado: 05-21-23
Definitely interesting to chew on and consider. Well articulated and argued, whether you agree or disagree you'll find something on here to turn over in your mind and be enriched by the engagement.
Also just wanna mention that Mr Strikwerda's narration was excellent. Lively and vital, expressive, moving at an even and measured clip, does a good job with names, makes his points with the sort of force and conviction that one imagines the author wrote it with. I'll be looking for more books narrated by Strikwerda, whatever the subject of the book happens to be!

Historia
The Mengzi is one of the very greatest works of world literature and philosophy, and it is perhaps the single most influential Confucian text of all time. Of all the Confucian classics, it is also the one most likely to speak to a contemporary audience. The Mengzi contains the dialogues, debates and sayings of Mengzi, a Confucian sage of the fourth century BCE. (He is also known by the Latinization of his name, 'Mencius'.)

Excellent book, great narration. Treat yourself!
Revisado: 04-03-22
I'm always a little hesitant to get audiobooks that are read by the same person who wrote it – it's a bit like indexing your own book, innit? – but Bryan knocked it out of the park, both in his discussion of Mengzi in the text itself, but absolutely in his narration. It wasn't too fast or too dry, rushing through because he already knew all the lines, and he kept an even pace and tone throughout the chapters, which is a skill that seems deceptively simple but is difficult to pull off. Not sure if he was an audiobook narrator in another life or if he's just a natural at this, but it was engaging to listen to on all the levels that matter for an audiobook.
I'll definitely be re-listening to this in the future!

Historia
Drawing on a wealth of psychological research, Alfie Kohn points the way to a more successful strategy based on working with people instead of doing things to them. "Do rewards motivate people?" asks Kohn. "Yes. They motivate people to get rewards." Seasoned with humor and familiar examples, Punished by Rewards presents an argument unsettling to hear but impossible to dismiss.

Rewards and praise make for well-trained dogs!!
Revisado: 05-14-21
I got this book after noticing that a variety of philosophers, from the West to the East, advise against both criticizing others, and also praising them. "What's wrong with praise?" I wondered.
This book's answer is stupendously compelling.
Mr Kohn and I definitely have our disagreements, but however you approach life, almost certainly an engagement with this book will improve you on a number of levels. It's about (an aspect of) how to live life in a virtuous manner, and how to support others in this as well. Praise and rewards and "positive incentives" undercut and sabotage our efforts here.
The performance is solid, you can absolutely tell he put his heart into this. The manner is engaging – it felt more like an old friend sharing some of their hard-earned wisdom, than an author reading words they had already read a thousand times before. I will definitely be listening to this again, and will encourage family, friends and coworkers to do the same!!
