Good premise, poor execution

Forced myself to finish. Forstchen is definitely a tell, don't show writer, making the characters and events flat. There were a few decent scenes that snuck in there but more where it sounded like a history report. There's so much wrong with this book but overall it's tedious

Narration was flat. There is no character development to speak of. The atmosphere and claustrophobia is well-developed. It's hard to tell if any of the scientific-sounding characters don't know science or if Malerman doesn't know science.

The book is much more fun if you pretend the world hasn't ended, life is still carrying on, and there's a bunch of people living in the woods with blindfolds on for no reason

Unexpectedly good

Many audio dramas suffer from clunky dialogue so they can describe a situation. The writers did a great job converting the story to something that is thoroughly entertaining without letting the seams show. The lead performances are great, so-so on a couple secondary characters, but good overall. It was fun!

Not what I expected in an awesome way

Would you consider the audio edition of A Gift of Time to be better than the print version?

Christopher Lane nails the narration in a way I don't think I could've done justice by reading.

What other book might you compare A Gift of Time to and why?

It's like A Brief History of Time meets Tom Sawyer with a hint of the emotion that To Kill a Mockingbird could achieve.

I expected sci-fi. I got that. I didn't expect feelings. I got those too.

That was tons of fun! I really enjoyed the '80s nostalgia vibes and Wil Wheaton was the cherry on top! Perfectly chosen narrator

Loved the narration

Andy Weir weaves in science to help move the story in fun ways. I've read other books that preach the science at you and must explain it in every gory boring detail. Weir did not do that. All the science stuff has a purpose to be mentioned and is explained simply and briefly in the main characters voice.

Rosario Dawson was awesome! I've always liked her as an actress, but now I really hope she narrates more! She really took the time to make the different voices and personalities unique and fit the characters.
