How to turn people off from Muir.
Revisado: 09-15-21
Wonderfully descriptive stories of nature from the turn of the 19th century. Unfortunately, there are maybe four narrators and they basically rank from average to poor. Their reading is lazy and spiritless while the mispronunciation of a vast range of words makes you wonder where they found these guys. Our National Parks and Stickeen are tolerable, otherwise I'd look for different versions of the remaining stories.

Surprisingly boring.
Revisado: 02-14-21
Too much focused on other individuals throughout his career and not enough on TR and his experiences. Some exciting portions are far outweighed by boring talk of political maneuvering.

In his earlier best sellers Guns, Germs and Steel and Collapse, Jared Diamond transformed our understanding of what makes civilizations rise and fall. Now, in the final audiobook in this monumental trilogy, he reveals how successful nations recover from crisis through selective change - a coping mechanism more commonly associated with personal trauma.

There are a few occasionally interesting sections, but overall, the book lacks any substance that made me want to keep going. It may stimulate thought for some listeners, but I struggled to stay focused throughout.

Historia
Moving to America in 2008, Finnish journalist Anu Partanen quickly went from confident, successful professional to wary, self-doubting mess. She found that navigating the basics of everyday life - from buying a cell phone and filing taxes to education and childcare - was much more complicated and stressful than anything she encountered in her homeland. At first she attributed her crippling anxiety to the difficulty of adapting to a freewheeling new culture. But as she got to know Americans better, she discovered they shared her deep apprehension.

At least it was fairly short, glad to be done.
Revisado: 09-09-20
This was not at all what I was expecting or hoping for and I really can't come up with anything good to say about this book. Early on, the author repeatedly states that maybe she just doesn't understand her new way of life in America and that is clearly the case as things progress. Admittedly, there are many things to dislike about the American way of life, but this would be more appropriately titled "Me and My Friend's Theory of Raising a Family". It's more or less a repetitive list of examples of the way in which things differ between Finland and the US. There's very little historical information on Finland or other Nordic countries and a significant amount of "My friend does this....and thinks this about it."
Additionally, the narrator continually attempts to impersonate other's voices and is generally awful. When an embarrassing attempt to impersonate Bill Clinton was made early on I thought maybe it would be a one-off and things would get on track, but it more or less just set the tone for the remainder of the book.
I've got about a month of listening time on Audible at the time of this review and these ~10 hours rank right at the bottom for me. I'm increasingly realizing that star ratings are essentially useless in choosing your next title.

It is the most famous military installation in the world. And it doesn't exist. Located a mere s75 miles outside of Las Vegas in Nevada's desert, the base has never been acknowledged by the US government - but Area 51 has captivated imaginations for decades. Annie Jacobsen had exclusive access to 19 men who served the base proudly and secretly for decades and are now aged 75-92, and unprecedented access to 55 additional military and intelligence personnel, scientists, pilots, and engineers linked to the secret base, 32 of whom lived and worked there for extended periods.

After walking through the portal in the Tower of Swallows while narrowly escaping death, Ciri finds herself in a completely different world...an Elven world. She is trapped, with no way out. Time does not seem to exist, and there are no obvious borders or portals to cross back into her home world. But this is Ciri, the child of prophecy, and she will not be defeated. She knows she must escape to finally rejoin the Witcher, Geralt, and his companions - and also to try to conquer her worst nightmare.

Disappointing and unnecessary.
Revisado: 10-24-19
The final book in the series was unnecessarily complicated, disappointing, and 80-90% unnecessary filler. Several chapters could be entirely omitted without any impact on the story. So many "what is the point of this?" moments and cheaply written resolutions. Overall, the series seems largely overrated. Unfortunate.

Historia
A deadly coup within the Wizard's Guild leaves the Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, gravely injured, and his ward Ciri missing in the third book of the New York Times best-selling series that inspired the Netflix show and the hit video games. The Wizards Guild has been shattered by a coup and, in the uproar, Geralt was seriously injured. The Witcher is supposed to be a guardian of the innocent, a protector of those in need, a defender against powerful and dangerous monsters that prey on men in dark times.

A couple new characters....
Revisado: 09-20-19
Thankfully, this book spends most of its time with Geralt and a few new, generally likeable characters. There's some fairly deep political discussions and a few appearances from Yennifer. By this point in the story, I've realized that I don't really care about Cirri or what she's doing. I've also realized that there's no reason for many of these books to be separated like they are, other than as a money grab from the author and publishers. Virtually nothing happens.... and then the book sort of just ends. I hope things start coming together, quickly.

Historia
For over a century, humans, dwarves, gnomes, and elves have lived together in relative peace. But times have changed, the uneasy peace is over, and now the races are fighting once again. The only good elf, it seems, is a dead elf. Geralt of Rivia, the cunning assassin known as The Witcher, has been waiting for the birth of a prophesied child. This child has the power to change the world - for good, or for evil.

Hopefully the weakest book in the series.
Revisado: 08-07-19
Ciri, triss, and Yennifer. The book jumps around quite a bit and can be a little difficult to follow with a multitude of obscure names and locations being thrown around. Additionally, very little takes place with regards to Geralt, but Ciri's story evolves quite a bit. Not as addictive as the first two, but obviously necessary to the series.
