Historia
It's the spring of 1917, and change is in the air. American women have done something remarkable: They've banded together to create military-style training camps for women who want to serve. These so-called National Service Schools prove irresistible to the Kopp sisters, who leave their farm in New Jersey to join up.

why all the sexual overtones?
Revisado: 07-18-24
I had enjoyed the series up until this point. But suddenly with this book it felt like there was an ongoing emphasis on references to past bedroom scenes! The backgrounds of certain characters could have been established without so many details. Half way through the book or so I decided enough is enough. I don't need to know how this ends badly enough to keep listening to this.

I don't think I've ever read a Diann Mills book I didn't like, and this one was no exception! It's a good mix of tension and romance, with a good sprinkling of God's love throughout.

Historia
July 1912. Lady Hardcastle and her tenacious lady’s maid, Florence Armstrong, are enjoying a convivial gathering at the home of their dear friends, the Farley-Strouds. The only fly in the idyllic ointment seems to be the lack of musical entertainment for the forthcoming summer party—until, that is, Lady Hardcastle’s brother Harry calls with news of a murder.

Historia
While walking her poodle, Olivia Limoges discovers a dead body buried in the sand. Could it be connected to the bizarre burglaries plaguing Oyster Bay, North Carolina? At every crime scene, the thieves set up odd tableaus: a stick of butter with a knife through it, dolls with silver spoons in their mouths, a deck of cards with a missing queen. Olivia realizes that each setup represents a cliché. And who better to decode the cliché clues than her Bayside Book Writers group?

Overall good, but...
Revisado: 05-19-24
I have enjoyed many of this author's books and series, but this particular series has joined my "thanks, but no thanks" list. I like the characters and the plots, but it seems like in each additional book, the bedroom scenes are increasing. Not over the top compared to many other books out there, I understand. But not what I read cozy books for. There are just too many other choices out there for me to spend any more time on this one.

Historia
The Watchmaker’s Daughter is one of the greatest stories of World War II that listeners haven’t heard: the remarkable and inspiring life story of Corrie ten Boom—a groundbreaking, female Dutch watchmaker, whose family unselfishly transformed their house into a hiding place straight out of a spy novel to shelter Jews and refugees from the Nazis during Gestapo raids. Even though the Nazis knew what the ten Booms were up to, they were never able to find those sheltered within the house when they raided it.

Amazing Book
Revisado: 03-09-24
I heard about this book somewhere just before a trip to Amsterdam. I knew I had to listen to it before my trip. It was everything I could have imagined it would be and so much more.
Sometimes I had to tske breaks from the story, because parts are so hard to hear, but the hope and love throughout shines higher than the evil.

Had to return because of the language
Revisado: 09-05-22
Books like this should be flagged for their bad language, so buyers know what they're getting. I liked the concept, and the ideas behind the little bit I was able to listen to. But I just don't want to listen to this much bad language. And there was no warning.

Historia
Nehemiah, the young son of a Jewish woman, a weaver from Jerusalem, is born and raised among the Jews who didn't return to Jerusalem from the Exile. Educated by Rabbi Kagba, one of the magi present at Jesus' birth thirty years earlier, Nehemiah grows up with the expectation of a soon-coming Messiah. Could the Yeshua of Nazareth, who is walking the earth, reportedly doing miracles, be that Messiah? When young Nehemiah must travel the long caravan road to Jerusalem, he is charged with an unusual mission...

I bought this quite awhile ago, but hadn't gotten around to listening to it. I stumbled upon it again while binge watching The Chosen. I loved them both. Great back stories for what we know from scripture. Wonderfully done.

Historia
Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich's plans while at her husband's side, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star.

Not what I was expecting
Revisado: 01-27-20
I would have liked to give this book 5 stars. But I held back for two reasons, and decided that each reason was sufficient to drop a star out of the overall rating:
1. The bedroom scenes, while not as prevelant as in some books that I've actually stopped reading, were frequent enough and unnecessary enough that I almost stopped reading this book more than once. Right about the time at which I was reaching for the stop button they would cease. But I see no benefit to having as much as there was in this potentially significant historical book. And for a book that is trying to show that a woman can have a brain as well as be beautiful, there was an awful lot of emphasis on her beauty.
2. The other complaint I have with the book comes from unmet expectations. I had read the summary of the book before starting to listen. As a result I was expecting much more about her invention and her difficulties with the military in getting it accepted. But the book was almost over before we even got to that point in her life. In fact, it took so long to get to that part of the story, that I went back to the summary more than once to make sure I was remembering it correctly.
Other than those two issues, I enjoyed the book overall.

Historia
Worry about cholesterol. Avoid red meat. Eat whole grains. Could it all be a lie? We live in an era of health hype and nutrition propaganda, and we are suffering for it. Decades of avoiding egg yolks, choosing margarine over butter, and replacing the real foods of our ancestors with low-fat, processed, packaged substitutes have left us with an obesity epidemic, ever-rising rates of chronic disease, and, above all, total confusion about what to eat and why.

Very Helpful Book
Revisado: 06-26-19
I look forward to putting into place many of the changes Liz recommends. Fortunately I had already known some of what she says - like, that Eggs and Fat are good for us, and grains, not so much. But Liz goes far beyond that. And her humor makes the wide use of facts and figures easier to listen to.
Before I was done listening I had already ordered two physical copies of the book, one for my Mom who was recently told she has high cholesterol, and one for me, since this is that type of book. (I wish Amazon gave discounts on the purchase of physical books after the purchase of an Audible one, but maybe that's just me!)
For all that, I had to go with 4 stars instead of 5, for two fundamental reasons - Liz likes to swear (though she did seem to let up a little as the book went on). And, she makes fairly regular references to Evolution, as if that explains everything. I don't buy Evolution as the explanation. I credit a Creator for the amazing bodies we have and the incredible world we live in. So the evolutionary references got a little tiring, at least for me.
But I'm still glad I have now bought three copies of this book. The nutritional information she shares is important enough for me to put up with those issues.
